A two-part celebration for the city's patron saint

In Valmontone, a town in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital overlooking the Sacco Valley, Saint Luigi Gonzaga is more than just the patron saint: he is the thread that runs through the entire local summer. The community celebrates him in two distinct moments of the year. On June 21st, the liturgical feast day, the statue of the saint—patron of the city and of youth—leaves the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Maggiore for a solemn evening procession through the streets of the center. However, it is on the last weekend of September that the patronal festival truly comes to life, with three days of religious, civic, and commercial events that symbolically close the summer season.

The solemn procession with band and fireworks

The religious heart of the September festival is the solemn procession of Saint Luigi Gonzaga, which crosses the historic center on Saturday evening with the participation of confraternities, local institutions, and the "Città di Valmontone – Otello Francesconi" marching band, accompanied by majorettes. At the end of the parade, a fireworks display lights up the sky above the rooftops of the town: a highly anticipated moment that draws families and visitors from neighboring towns in the Roman province and the Frosinone area.

The Fiera delle Merci, heir to the ancient livestock fair

The final Sunday is dedicated to the traditional Fiera delle Merci, one of the oldest market events in the territory, a direct descendant of the ancient livestock fair and a testament to Valmontone's agricultural roots. From early morning until evening, the streets of the center and the Valle district fill with market stalls: clothing, home textiles, wickerwork, toys, hardware, plants, flowers, handicrafts, and typical food products. In Piazza della Repubblica, the fair is enriched by the Campagna Amica Coldiretti stalls, where you can purchase fresh, zero-kilometer products directly from Lazio producers.

Rural traditions, associations, and local flavors

Saturday is traditionally dedicated to the Day of Associations and Rural Traditions in the La Valle district: local association stands, workshops for children, basket-weaving demonstrations, vintage games, and tastings of Cesanese wine, the red wine that symbolizes these hills. There is no shortage of food stalls, street food, and cooking demonstrations dedicated to local specialties, such as the gnocco di tritello, while folk groups enliven the squares with traditional music and dances.

Free concerts in the square

The patronal festival is also about live music: over the years, the Valmontone stage has hosted top-tier Italian artists—from Alan Sorrenti to the Enrico Ruggeri concert that closed the 2024 edition in Piazza Brodolini—always with free admission. The main evenings are complemented by performances by local choirs and bands, running races like the San Luigi Trophy in the historic center, and cultural initiatives at Palazzo Doria Pamphilj, the monumental 17th-century palace that dominates the city.

The event is organized by the Municipality of Valmontone with the collaboration of the Pro Loco and local associations, and in various editions, it has enjoyed the support of the Lazio Region and the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital.
