Historical re-enactment of the grape harvest in Paterno di Campli
La Via de li Regne – Grape Festival is a historical re-enactment of the grape harvest held in Paterno di Campli, a small village in the municipality of Campli, nestled in the heart of the Monti Gemelli in the province of Teramo, Abruzzo. Promoted by the Villa Paterno nel Cuore cultural association with the patronage of the Municipality of Campli, the event aims to revive one of the most active agricultural traditions of the area from decades past: the production of native wines and the renowned Paterno vino cotto.
For the occasion, the entire town transforms into a living village. Along an itinerant route in the historic center, all the stages of the ancient harvest are re-enacted: picking grapes in the vineyards, transporting them to the village, traditional grape treading, and the subsequent boiling of the must—a defining gesture of local heritage. The village's old cellars reopen to welcome visitors, who can experience the scents, flavors, and wisdom of the past firsthand.
The day combines gastronomy with culture. In recent editions, the stroll through the village streets has been accompanied by Abruzzese folk music from the group Li Cuntadì and insights from local scholars, such as journalist and author Nicolino Farina, dedicated to the winemaking traditions of Paterno. The re-enactment has been part of the Borghi e Sentieri della Laga cultural festival calendar for years, which promotes the small villages of the Teramo mountain area.
Located among the villages dotting the Campli territory, Paterno preserves the memory of a farming community deeply tied to vine cultivation. Vino cotto, obtained from the slow boiling of grape must, was once a central element of rural life and family celebrations. The Grape Festival restores this intangible heritage to visitors, offering an authentic experience of inland Abruzzo far from the beaten tourist path.
The Grape Festival and the historical re-enactment La Via de li Regne return to Paterno di Campli on September 20, 2026, as part of the "Campli Summer 2026" program organized by the Municipality of Campli and local associations. As in previous editions, the village prepares to become a living narrative of the harvest, featuring traditional grape treading, must boiling, and open cellars. The detailed program, including times and musical events, will be announced by the organizers closer to the date.
The event takes place in Paterno, a hamlet of the Municipality of Campli (TE), in the Teramo hinterland of the Monti Gemelli.
By car: take the A14 motorway to the Teramo/Giulianova exit, then follow the SS 81 towards Campli and its hamlets. The nearest train station is in Teramo, connected to Paterno by local roads.
Admission to the event is generally free. For information: call +39 333 3204171 or +39 320 1612550; visit the tourist portal visitcampli.it.
