About La Rocca Longobarda

Every spring, the ancient village of Roccabascerana, in the province of Avellino, travels back a thousand years with "La Rocca Longobarda," a historical re-enactment organized by the local Pro Loco in partnership with the Benevento Longobarda cultural association. At the foot of the rocky spur that holds the remains of the ancient Lombard tower, encampments, duels, archery, falconry, flag-wavers, and jugglers come to life, while the narrow streets of the historic center fill with medieval music and the aromas of the local tavern.

A night in the Middle Ages, in the shadow of the Lombard tower

La Rocca Longobarda is a historical re-enactment that, on a Sunday in May, transports the historic center of Roccabascerana—a town in the Province of Avellino, in Campania—back to the era when Irpinia was part of the Lombard Duchy of Benevento. The event takes place in the evening, between 6:00 PM and 9:00 PM, when the grazing light and torches lit on the stone walls give the village an atmosphere that no daytime reconstruction could ever replicate.

The rocky spur and the remains of the tower

The scenic heart of the event is the rocky spur that overlooks the town and preserves the remains of an ancient Lombard tower, a defining symbol of the village and a concrete memory of the defensive system that guarded the inner routes of the Campanian Apennines. The re-enactment path winds around this landmark, climbing from the main square toward the old residential core and the Chapel of the SS. Rosario.

The Lombard camp: weapons, armor, and archery

The historical reconstruction is managed by the "Benevento Longobarda" Cultural Association, which sets up an encampment in the village dedicated to the daily life of the Lombards. The public can observe up close:

  • exhibitions of weapons and armor reconstructed according to period sources;
  • combat simulations and duels between re-enactors in costume;
  • demonstrations and trials of archery;
  • educational stalls dedicated to Lombard customs, crafts, and material culture.

Falconry, flag-wavers, and street performers

Alongside the historical core, the evening is brought to life by a varied performance program. Falconers present their birds of prey and showcase their flight, revealing the secrets of an ancient art linked to medieval courts; flag-wavers, jugglers, acrobats, fire-eaters, and musicians are scattered throughout the village squares, ensuring visitors encounter a new scene at every corner. A costumed parade marches through the village to officially kick off the re-enactment.

The Janare and theatrical tours

One of the most original elements is the link to local legends: the janare, the witches of Campanian folklore, become the protagonists of limited-access theatrical tours that guide small groups toward the rocky spur and the Chapel of the SS. Rosario. The guided tours are accompanied by live medieval music, while the evening concludes with a fire show near the public fountain.

The tavern: "La Locanda della Duchessa Ida"

The gastronomic component is not overlooked, curated with the same philological spirit as the rest of the event: the "La Locanda della Duchessa Ida" stand offers dishes inspired by medieval cuisine, served in a themed setting. It is the perfect opportunity for a slow break in the middle of the route, between a duel and a falcon's flight.

Organizers

The event is promoted by the Pro Loco of Roccabascerana with the support of the Municipality of Roccabascerana and the collaboration of the "Benevento Longobarda" Cultural Association. The event is part of the circuit of cultural appointments promoted by the Province of Avellino through the Sistema Irpinia portal.

Why it's worth the trip

La Rocca Longobarda is not a massive re-enactment with thousands of extras: it is a carefully crafted village festival where its small scale is a virtue. In just a few hours, you can walk through the entire village, speak directly with the re-enactors, and discover a page of history—the Lombard era—that left deep but often untold traces in Irpinia. It is also an excellent opportunity to explore a corner of inland Campania that is often off the beaten tourist path, located just a short distance from both Avellino and Benevento.
