About La Quercia d'Oro

La Quercia d'Oro is an amateur theater festival and competition that brings Grumo Appula, in the province of Bari, to life every winter. Organized by the «Amici dell'Arte - Vito Fazio» Cultural Association, active in the town since 1967, the event hosts theater companies from across Puglia at the municipal auditorium. Every Sunday evening between February and May, they compete with brilliant comedies, dramas, and dialect performances. At the end of the season, a jury awards the coveted «Golden Oak» trophy to the best production.

An amateur theater competition in the heart of Puglia

La Quercia d'Oro is one of the longest-running amateur theater festivals in the Bari area: a true competition that turns winter and spring Sunday evenings into must-attend events for theater lovers in Grumo Appula. Hosted in the local auditorium, the event features non-professional companies from the Bari Metropolitan City and across Puglia, all vying for the trophy that gives the festival its name.

The «Amici dell'Arte - Vito Fazio» Association, since 1967

Behind the festival is the «Amici dell'Arte» Cultural Association, named after its founder Vito Fazio and active in Grumo Appula since 1967. For over half a century, the group has promoted theatrical culture in the region, fostering a passion for the stage and showcasing the many amateur companies of Puglia. La Quercia d'Oro is the flagship initiative of this long-standing activity: a hub that combines performance, social interaction, and community spirit.

How the festival works

The season unfolds over several weeks, with weekly events held on Sunday evenings. Each night, a different company presents its show, ranging from brilliant vernacular comedies to classic repertoire, dramas, and lighter pieces. At the end of the season, a jury evaluates the performances and awards the main prizes:

  • the «Golden Oak» for the best competing company;
  • awards for best acting (lead and supporting roles);
  • mentions for direction, set design, and young actors.

The 2026 edition, the 23rd

The 23rd edition took place from February 1st to May 3rd, 2026, maintaining the traditional Sunday evening format. The final evening, on Sunday, May 3rd, featured the comedy «Pautasso Antonio, esperto in matrimonio» performed by L'Allegra Compagnia di Turi. At the end of the competition, the top awards went to the Piccolo Teatro di Grumo Appula and Teatro Due di Binetto.

The companies and the audience

Over the years, La Quercia d'Oro has hosted numerous local groups, including Piccolo Teatro di Grumo Appula, Teatro Due di Binetto, Il Mosaico from Modugno, Officina d'Arte from Bitetto, Compagnia dei Teatranti from Bisceglie, and L'Allegra Compagnia from Turi. The loyal audience, often season-ticket holders, fills the auditorium night after night, making the festival an authentic collective ritual for the Municipality of Grumo Appula.

Why it's worth attending

More than just a season of shows, La Quercia d'Oro is an opportunity to discover the vitality of Puglian amateur theater: laughter, reflection, and plenty of participation in a friendly and accessible atmosphere.
