Amateur theater festival and competition in Grumo Appula
La Quercia d'Oro is one of the longest-running amateur theater festivals in the Bari area: a true competition that turns winter and spring Sunday evenings into must-attend events for theater lovers in Grumo Appula. Hosted in the local auditorium, the event features non-professional companies from the Bari Metropolitan City and across Puglia, all vying for the trophy that gives the festival its name.
Behind the festival is the «Amici dell'Arte» Cultural Association, named after its founder Vito Fazio and active in Grumo Appula since 1967. For over half a century, the group has promoted theatrical culture in the region, fostering a passion for the stage and showcasing the many amateur companies of Puglia. La Quercia d'Oro is the flagship initiative of this long-standing activity: a hub that combines performance, social interaction, and community spirit.
The season unfolds over several weeks, with weekly events held on Sunday evenings. Each night, a different company presents its show, ranging from brilliant vernacular comedies to classic repertoire, dramas, and lighter pieces. At the end of the season, a jury evaluates the performances and awards the main prizes:
The 23rd edition took place from February 1st to May 3rd, 2026, maintaining the traditional Sunday evening format. The final evening, on Sunday, May 3rd, featured the comedy «Pautasso Antonio, esperto in matrimonio» performed by L'Allegra Compagnia di Turi. At the end of the competition, the top awards went to the Piccolo Teatro di Grumo Appula and Teatro Due di Binetto.
Over the years, La Quercia d'Oro has hosted numerous local groups, including Piccolo Teatro di Grumo Appula, Teatro Due di Binetto, Il Mosaico from Modugno, Officina d'Arte from Bitetto, Compagnia dei Teatranti from Bisceglie, and L'Allegra Compagnia from Turi. The loyal audience, often season-ticket holders, fills the auditorium night after night, making the festival an authentic collective ritual for the Municipality of Grumo Appula.
More than just a season of shows, La Quercia d'Oro is an opportunity to discover the vitality of Puglian amateur theater: laughter, reflection, and plenty of participation in a friendly and accessible atmosphere. For those visiting the Bari hinterland during the winter months, it offers a genuine window into local popular culture.
The 2026 edition of the amateur theater festival La Quercia d'Oro took place from February 1 to May 3, 2026, following the traditional Sunday evening schedule at the Grumo Appula auditorium. Each event hosted a different company competing for the trophy awarded by the jury.
The final evening, on Sunday, May 3, featured the comedy «Pautasso Antonio, esperto in matrimonio» by L'Allegra Compagnia di Turi. At the end of the season, the main awards went to the Piccolo Teatro di Grumo Appula and the Teatro Due di Binetto, the stars of this 23rd edition organized by the «Amici dell'Arte - Vito Fazio» Association.
The shows are held at the municipal auditorium of Grumo Appula (BA), in Puglia.
