Epiphany Eve: masks, songs, and open doors in Montignoso
In the heart of the province of Massa-Carrara, at the foot of the Apuan Alps, the town of Montignoso preserves one of northern Tuscany's most fascinating traditions: La Pefana. Celebrated annually on the night between January 5th and 6th, the eve of the Epiphany, the town lights up with masks, songs, and a collective ritual defined by irony, music, and wide-open doors.
The Epiphany night masquerade is undoubtedly ancient. Its origins likely trace back to the pre-Roman rites of the Osci and Samnites, Dionysian celebrations, and the "Atellanae" farces, eventually merging with Nordic propitiatory rites dedicated to "Mother Earth," performed to ward off winter fears and invoke abundance for the new year. In the form passed down to us, small processions of masked youths, led by an unmasked adult acting as a guarantor, would roam the villages amidst the clatter of cowbells, visiting homes in silence, offering sweets to children, and receiving warm drinks in return. The charm lay in that silence, broken only by the sound of the bells. Since the 1920s, this ancient ceremony has been accompanied by the Canto della Pefana, where groups of singers tour the town from December 30th to January 5th, announcing the festival with rhyming verses.
The central square is the heart of the event, but the entire municipal territory is involved. Entertainment kicks off around 8:00 PM and continues until late, turning the square into a true open-air music festival. From the early evening, masked groups roam the streets, bringing joy and wonder to homes that, as tradition dictates, welcome the Pefana with festive tables, warm drinks, and smiles. Numerous houses open their doors throughout the municipality, including the hamlet of Renella.
La Pefana is also a moment of healthy competition: a friendly contest, driven by creativity and good humor, rewards the most original masked groups and the most hospitable homes, turning every residence into a meeting point for sharing food, drinks, and conviviality. Recent editions have featured groups with playful, dialect-inspired names such as Pefan Gospel Choir, La Pefananza, "Iere, Oce e anche diman", Befana Dance, "Acc'era una volta", L'Apefana, and "Assian Rimasti in tre".
Capable of drawing thousands of people, La Pefana is much more than a simple village festival: it is a defining event that tells the story of the popular roots of Montignoso and the entire Apuan Versilia in Tuscany. For visitors, it is an opportunity to discover an authentic, participatory tradition, lived by the community with pride and affection, on a night when friendship and collective memory take center stage.
