La Nueva Ola comes to Capalbio

La Nueva Ola, Italy's premier festival dedicated to Spanish and Latin American cinema, arrives in Capalbio, in the heart of the Grosseto Maremma, on August 24th and 25th, 2026. Screenings will be held at 9:30 PM at the new Teatro del Leccio, an open-air stage designed by architect Maurice Nio that has become the cornerstone of the summer cultural season in the Municipality of Capalbio, in the province of Grosseto.

A travelling festival in its 19th edition

Founded in 2008 and organized by Exit Media, La Nueva Ola is a festival that tours Italy from north to south every year. After its main stop in Rome and visits to numerous cities—from Genoa to Naples, Prato to Messina, and Brescia to Bolzano—the festival arrives in Tuscany, bringing a selection of contemporary Iberian and Latin American films to Capalbio. The nineteenth edition is dedicated to the theme "The Paths of Comedy," a journey through Spanish and Portuguese-language cinema exploring the comedic register and its many forms.

Original language cinema under the Maremma stars

The festival's signature is screening films in their original language with Italian subtitles, a choice that highlights the actors' voices and the authenticity of the works. In Capalbio, the evenings take place outdoors, in a picturesque setting between the hills and the medieval village overlooking the sea, offering the public an experience that combines great international cinema with the relaxed atmosphere of a Maremma summer.

An international cultural network

La Nueva Ola relies on the collaboration of a wide network of cultural institutions, including the embassies of Spain and Latin American countries, the IILA — Italo-Latin American International Organization, and the Instituto Cervantes. This diplomatic and cultural framework makes the festival a benchmark for the promotion of Spanish-language cinema in Italy, featuring competitive sections dedicated to both Spanish and Latin American productions, with awards presented by qualified juries.

Capalbio, cultural capital of the Maremma summer

The La Nueva Ola stop is part of a rich summer calendar that includes about seventy events in Capalbio between June and September, from screenings at the Nuovo Cinema Tirreno to Capalbio Libri and the Capalbio Film Festival in September. The village, a destination for refined cultural tourism for decades, thus confirms its role as a crossroads for cinema, literature, and live performance in Tuscany.
