Four days of auteur cinema nestled between the hills and the coast of the Tuscan Maremma
The Capalbio Film Festival is one of Tuscany's youngest and most dynamic cinematic events. Founded in 2022 and promoted by the Fondazione Capalbio, it brings directors, actors, screenwriters, and film enthusiasts to the charming hilltop village of Capalbio, in the province of Grosseto, every September. In just a few years, the festival has grown rapidly, consistently selling out screenings and attracting a steadily increasing audience, earning a prominent place in the Italian festival landscape.
The festival is led by a prestigious artistic committee that brings together some of the most authoritative figures in Italian cinema and culture: critic Steve Della Casa, former director of the Torino Film Festival; agent and producer Daniele Orazi; Rai Cinema production manager Susanna Laudi (the event's founder); and professor Carlo Alberto Pratesi, an expert in sustainability and innovation. This blend of the film world and environmental awareness is one of the festival's hallmarks, with a dedicated day each year focusing on sustainability through the Green Ciak award.
Over four days, the Capalbio Film Festival presents premieres, feature films, documentaries, talks, and Q&As with authors, alongside awards celebrating major figures in Italian cinema. Past accolades include the Excellence Award, the Screenplay Award, the Green Ciak, and the Film Music Award, all set in an informal and welcoming atmosphere that brings the public closer to the stars of the screen.
The setting is the unmistakable village of Capalbio, a medieval town enclosed by walls that overlook the Maremma plains down to the Tyrrhenian Sea, on the southern border of Tuscany and Lazio. Screenings take place at the Nuovo Cinema Tirreno in Borgo Carige; from 2026, the event will also feature the new Teatro del Leccio, a structure designed by architect Maurice Nio that will increase capacity and support the municipality's entire summer cultural season. The festival is part of a rich calendar of initiatives that includes Capalbio Libri, concerts, theatrical performances, and festivals dedicated to Spanish and Latin American cinema.
The fifth edition of the Capalbio Film Festival will take place from September 17 to 20, 2026. The dates were announced at the end of the 2025 edition, which concluded with a very positive outcome and sold-out screenings.
The most significant innovation for 2026 is the opening of the new Teatro del Leccio, a structure designed by architect Maurice Nio, which will complement the Nuovo Cinema Tirreno in Borgo Carige, resolving the capacity issues encountered in the previous edition. The event maintains its four-day format dedicated to screenings, premieres, meetings with authors, and awards, along with the now-customary day focused on sustainability.
The program featuring guests, films, and awards will be released by the Fondazione Capalbio closer to the event.
The detailed program for the fifth edition, including films, guests, and awards, will be announced by the Fondazione Capalbio in the weeks leading up to the festival. The usual structure includes four days of evening screenings, premieres, meetings with directors and actors, talks, and a day dedicated to environmental sustainability with the Green Ciak award.
Debut of the new Teatro del Leccio (designed by Maurice Nio) alongside the Nuovo Cinema Tirreno, offering increased capacity. Four days of auteur cinema, meetings with authors, and awards for excellence.
