Pizzica in the heart of Grecìa Salentina
Every summer, La Notte della Taranta, Italy's largest festival dedicated to folk music, transforms Salento into a long, collective ritual of pizzica and tradition. Before the famous final Concertone in Melpignano, the Traveling Festival visits around twenty squares across Salento, and one of the most anticipated stops is Calimera, a Griko town in the province of Lecce, Puglia. For one night, Piazza Gabrieli and the historic center fill with tambourines, violins, accordions, and voices, with free admission until late at night.
Calimera is one of the towns of Grecìa Salentina, the linguistic island where Griko is still spoken, an ancient Hellenic-origin language that survived in southern Salento. The town's very name, in Griko, means "good morning": a perfect welcome for a community that has turned its musical and linguistic identity into a heritage to be preserved and shared. It is no coincidence that Calimera is linked to the memory of Pier Paolo Pasolini, who arrived here in 1975 to listen to folk songs and the moroloja, the ancient funeral laments of the Griko tradition.
The Calimera stop is part of the Traveling Festival circuit, which visits about twenty Salento municipalities each year, bringing pizzica pizzica and its various influences to the public squares. These traveling evenings are free and open to everyone, culminating in the grand final Concertone in Melpignano, before hundreds of thousands of spectators. The event is organized by the La Notte della Taranta Foundation in collaboration with the network's municipalities, including Calimera.
The twenty-ninth edition of the festival is themed "The Paths of the Mediterranean", viewing the sea not as a border but as a millennial space of encounters, migrations, and intertwining cultures. The 2026 Maestro Concertatore is Ermal Meta, an artist of Albanian origin raised in Bari, who authentically embodies this theme. The final Concertone is scheduled for August 22, 2026, in Melpignano; the Calimera stop is confirmed for August 3, 2026. The detailed program for the evening in Calimera will be announced by the Foundation in the weeks leading up to the event.
The heart of La Notte della Taranta is the pizzica, the ancient therapeutic dance of tarantism that has become a symbol of Salento worldwide. The stage features the La Notte della Taranta Popular Orchestra, traditional singers and musicians, storytelling moments, and cultural meetings (the so-called Taranta Talks). The audience dances together in a choral embrace that unites residents, tourists, and enthusiasts from all over Italy and abroad.
The Calimera stop of the La Notte della Taranta 2026 Traveling Festival is confirmed for Monday, August 3, 2026. The evening is part of the twenty-ninth edition of the festival, this year dedicated to the theme "The Paths of the Mediterranean", with Ermal Meta as the Maestro Concertatore for the final Concertone in Melpignano (August 22, 2026).
Like all traveling stops, the Calimera event will have free admission, featuring pizzica, Salento folk music, and Mediterranean influences in the town square. The detailed program for the evening, including artists and times, will be communicated by the La Notte della Taranta Foundation in the weeks leading up to the event.
Calimera is located about 15 km southeast of Lecce, in Puglia. By car, it can be reached via the SS16 or the SP with an exit for Grecìa Salentina; the most convenient train station is Lecce, connected to the town by Ferrovie del Sud Est lines and bus services.
The Traveling Festival stop has free admission and takes place in the evening, generally starting from 8:30 PM, in the town squares. It is recommended to arrive early to find a spot and parking.
Bring comfortable shoes for dancing the pizzica, water, and, for those arriving from afar, consider staying overnight in Calimera, Lecce, or the nearby towns of Grecìa Salentina.
