Salento's pizzica in the heart of Grecìa Salentina
Every summer, Salento transforms into one vast, open-air dance floor, and Zollino, a small town in the Grecìa Salentina area of Lecce province, is one of its most cherished stops. This is where La Notte della Taranta, Europe's largest traveling folk music festival, makes its mark, touring Salento's villages each year before culminating in the famous Concertone in Melpignano.
Founded in 1998 and organized by the La Notte della Taranta Foundation, the festival is much more than a concert: it is a collective ritual that brings pizzica pizzica—the ancient dance linked to the phenomenon of tarantism—back to life. For about three weeks between late July and August, the event brings music and dance to the squares of around twenty Salento municipalities, supported by the Puglia Region, the Ministry of Culture, and the Union of Grecìa Salentina Municipalities. The Zollino stage is one of the first in the circuit.
In Largo Villa Comunale, the heart of the Zollino evenings, the La Notte della Taranta Popular Orchestra, historic Salento music groups, and the festival's special guests take the stage. The hypnotic sound of tambourines, accordions, battente guitars, and voices singing in the Salento dialect accompany a crowd that dances the pizzica non-stop, in an embrace between generations, residents, and visitors arriving from all over Italy and abroad.
Alongside the musical performances, the evenings of La Notte della Taranta host Taranta Talks, meetings and debates with scholars, journalists, and musicians who delve into the roots and contemporary relevance of Salento's folk music. It is the hallmark of a festival that combines street celebrations with cultural reflection on local traditions. In Zollino, the evening is often accompanied by guided tours of the town's historic center.
Zollino is one of the towns where Griko, the ancient Greek-origin language of Salento, still survives. Experiencing La Notte della Taranta here means immersing yourself in a territory with a powerful identity, made of centuries-old olive trees, dry-stone walls, courtyards, and squares that become the natural stage for pizzica in the summer. A free, unmissable event for those who want to discover the most authentic soul of Puglia.
The Zollino stage is confirmed for Friday, July 31, 2026, as part of the traveling festival La Notte della Taranta, the 29th edition of the event, this year dedicated to the theme of the Mediterranean as a space for encounter between peoples and cultures. Zollino is one of the first stops on the circuit, which begins on July 30 in Corigliano d'Otranto and travels through about twenty Salento municipalities until the grand Concertone of Melpignano, scheduled for Saturday, August 22, 2026, under the direction of Maestro Concertatore Ermal Meta.
As per tradition, the evening in Zollino will bring pizzica pizzica to Largo Villa Comunale, featuring the Popular Orchestra and Salento music groups. Admission will be free.
The detailed program for the Zollino stage (guest artists, groups, and times) will be announced by the La Notte della Taranta Foundation in the weeks leading up to the event, as happens every year for the individual evenings of the traveling festival.
The evening is part of the 2026 traveling circuit, which includes twenty stops from July 30 to August 19 and precedes the final Concertone in Melpignano on August 22, directed by Maestro Concertatore Ermal Meta with guests such as Alessandra Amoroso, Levante, and Sayf.
Performances are held in the center of Zollino, in the province of Lecce, traditionally in Largo Villa Comunale. Access is free.
By car: Zollino can be reached via the provincial roads connecting Lecce to lower Salento (about 25 km from Lecce), in the Grecìa Salentina area. By train: Ferrovie del Sud Est trains connect Lecce to the towns of Grecìa Salentina, including Zollino. Nearest airport: Brindisi-Papola Casale.
Admission is free. Performances generally begin in the late evening (from 8:30 PM onwards) and continue until late at night. We recommend arriving early to secure a spot.
Comfortable shoes for dancing, water, and light clothing. During the festival, parking in the town center is limited: it is best to leave your car in the areas outside the town.
