Fabrizio De André's album for choir and orchestra at the Castle of Viale d'Asti
The Castle of Viale d'Asti, a small town in the Province of Asti nestled in the hills of the Piedmontese Monferrato, hosts an evening entirely dedicated to one of the most beloved records in Italian music: "La Buona Novella" by Fabrizio De André. On stage, the Piccola Orchestra Sand Creek—a group formed by friends bound by the musical message and values of Faber—is joined by the Coro Polifonico Astense, a choral ensemble founded in Asti in 1996, now consisting of about 35 members.
Released in 1970, "La Buona Novella" is a concept album conceived almost like a theatrical work: De André reinterprets evangelical figures by drawing on apocryphal Gospels, those not recognized by the official Church. The result is a deeply human portrait of Christ, far from traditional iconography and close to the marginalized and the oppressed. The full performance offered in Viale returns the entire narrative arc of the record to the audience, from birth to crucifixion, in a version enriched by the voices of the choir and the orchestra's arrangements.
The show brings together a large ensemble of musicians and vocalists. The Coro Polifonico Astense is conducted by Maestro Gianluca Fasano, while the Piccola Orchestra Sand Creek features, among others, Lucky Riccio (vocals and guitar), Ettore Eterno (violin), Aristide Cassullo (guitars and vocals), Elio Calosso (bass and vocals), Marina Barbier (keyboards and vocals), Veronica Corapi (flute and vocals), Fernanda Saravalli (harp), Alessandro Ferraris (percussion), Andrea Olivero (piano and percussion), Beppe Peccheneda (drums), Emanuela Tartaglino (soprano), and Paolo Cerrato (narrator).
The concert takes place in the evocative setting of the Castle of Viale, on Via Faussone, in the heart of the small village. The intimate and charming location is perfect for a singer-songwriter event that thrives on atmosphere and attentive listening. The evening is part of the Monferrato territory's tradition, a land of wine, UNESCO landscapes, and a vibrant cultural scene linked to the memory of Fabrizio De André, one of the most important voices in Piedmontese music.
