About Krampus Primör

Every December, as darkness falls, the historic streets of Fiera di Primiero echo with the sound of cowbells, horns, and terrifying masks. These are the Krampus Primör, monstrous goat-men who parade through the heart of this Trentino village. Rooted in the Alpine tradition of Saint Nicholas, the Krampus Night is one of the most evocative and beloved folkloric events of the winter in Primiero, blending ancestral charm with a touch of thrill.

The Krampus Primör Night in Fiera di Primiero

As the sun sets behind the Pale di San Martino and the streets of Fiera di Primiero fade into darkness, one of the oldest and most deeply felt traditions of the Alpine region comes to life: the Krampus Primör Night. In the historic center of the village, located in the municipality of Primiero San Martino di Castrozza (Province of Trento, Trentino-Alto Adige), the Krampus make their appearance amidst the clanging of cowbells and the deep, haunting sound of horns.

The Krampus are described as monstrous and wild goat-men: creatures with faces hidden behind wooden masks, draped in furs and chains, roaming the dark alleys in search of "naughty" children. With their menacing gait, they frighten, chase, and test the courage of both young and old in a ritual that traces its roots back to the peasant beliefs of the Dolomite valleys.

The Tradition of Saint Nicholas and the Krampus

The figure of the Krampus is inextricably linked to that of Saint Nicholas. According to the Alpine tradition widespread throughout much of Trentino-Alto Adige, the bearded bishop—patron saint of Bari and protector of children—travels through the village streets distributing sweets, candies, and dried fruit to the little ones. Following closely behind him are the Krampus, tasked with terrorizing and punishing those who haven't been good throughout the year. It is this contrast between the saint's benevolence and the ferocity of the goat-demons that makes this ritual so fascinating and theatrical.

The Krampus Primör Group

The event is organized by the Krampus Primör Group, established in 2013 by a spontaneous gathering of enthusiasts eager to preserve and renew this tradition. Today, the group counts about fifteen members, aged between 9 and 60, all united by their passion for the world of the Krampus. Great care is dedicated to craftsmanship: the masks are hand-carved from wood, primarily larch, transforming those who wear them into mysterious and frightening spirits. These are complemented by heavy furs, horns, and cowbells that make up the full costume.

During the winter season, the Krampus Primör enliven various events throughout the Primiero and San Martino di Castrozza area, including evening parades, appearances at Christmas markets, and even ice skating in costume. However, the Krampus Night in Fiera di Primiero remains the highlight, drawing both residents and tourists to the town center.

An Experience to Live in Primiero

Attending the Krampus parade means immersing yourself in a unique atmosphere, suspended between folklore, thrill, and community spirit. It is recommended to stay on the sidelines and keep a close eye on younger children, who might be frightened by these imposing characters. The setting of the historic village of Fiera di Primiero, with its narrow streets and porticoes, amplifies the allure of this ancient ritual of the Trentino Dolomites.

Krampus Primör — edition 2026
