Christmas Eve illuminated by torches in the woods of Siror

In the heart of the Primiero Valley, at the foot of the Pale di San Martino, the small village of Siror celebrates Christmas Eve every year with an atmospheric event: the Traditional Christmas Torchlight Procession. Siror, a hamlet within the municipality of Primiero San Martino di Castrozza in the Autonomous Province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige), sits at an altitude of 765 meters, surrounded by coniferous forests that become the stage for a spectacular light show on the night of December 24th.
On Christmas Eve, as the village prepares for the holiday, dozens of participants carrying torches gather on the trails above the town. At the appointed time, the torches are lit, and the slow descent from the woods toward the center of Siror begins: from the village, spectators witness a fascinating play of light and reflections winding through the snow-covered trees, one of the most photographed moments of the Primiero winter.
The procession of lights reaches the Central Square of Siror, where the community gathers to exchange Christmas greetings. This convivial moment is accompanied by steaming mulled wine and sémeli, the traditional pastry enjoyed in Siror during the festive season. It is a simple, heartfelt ritual that precedes Midnight Mass, bringing together residents, holidaymakers, and visitors in a cozy, festive atmosphere.
The torchlight procession is organized by the Comitato Tradizione e Cultura di Siror, a volunteer association that enlivens village life with numerous initiatives throughout the year, from the famous Christmas Market (the Christkindlmarkt, one of the oldest in Trentino) to the autumn desmontegar festival. The event is also promoted by the ApT San Martino di Castrozza, Passo Rolle, Primiero and Vanoi and is included in the valley's Christmas event calendar.
Participating in the Siror Christmas Torchlight Procession means experiencing Christmas in its most authentic, alpine dimension, far from the flashy lights of big cities. Participation is free and open to everyone. Those visiting the area can combine the event with exploring the historic center of Siror, with its clustered houses and stone portals, and the natural beauty of the San Martino di Castrozza area, within the Paneveggio - Pale di San Martino Natural Park.
Official information regarding the 2026 edition of the Traditional Siror Christmas Torchlight Procession has not yet been published by the Comitato Tradizione e Cultura di Siror. As per tradition, the torchlight procession is held on the evening of Christmas Eve in the village of Primiero San Martino di Castrozza: torches descend from the woods toward the town center, and the convivial moment with mulled wine and sémeli is renewed in the Central Square. To find out the updated date and times, it is recommended to check the channels of the Siror Committee and the ApT San Martino di Castrozza, Passo Rolle, Primiero and Vanoi closer to the holidays.
