The devils of the Alps return to the streets of Castello Tesino

In the period leading up to Christmas, the small village of Castello Tesino in Valsugana turns into an open-air stage for one of the most evocative traditions of the Alps: the Krampus Parade. Organized by the Pro Loco and the Municipality of Castello Tesino, in collaboration with local associations, the event attracts curious visitors, families, and folklore enthusiasts from all over the province of Trento and beyond.
The Krampus are half-human, half-beast figures wrapped in heavy furs, armed with chains, whips, and cowbells, wearing long horns and finely carved wooden masks with sharp fangs. According to ancient Alpine custom, these "devils" accompany the arrival of Saint Nicholas on the evening of December 5th: while the saint rewards good children with gifts, the Krampus are tasked with scaring and punishing the naughty ones. In Castello Tesino, the parade is animated by the Krampus di Teufel da Soraga, a group from the Val di Fassa known for their elaborate costumes and tension-filled performances.
The parade kicks off from Sant'Ippolito in the late afternoon and travels through the historic center to the Giardini di Via Dante, the final gathering point of the evening. Amidst smoke, cowbells, and shouts, the Krampus move through the crowd, creating a mix of the sacred and the profane that has its roots in pre-Christian winter solstice rites. It is not uncommon for the tradition to intertwine with the arrival of Saint Lucy, who brings gifts to children and collects their letters.
Upon arrival at the Giardini di Via Dante, the chill of the Trentino winter is warded off by rich food stalls and hot drinks. Typical offerings include grilled polenta accompanied by sauerkraut, cotechino sausage, and pork ribs, while the Christmas market and music complete the festive atmosphere.
The Krampus Parade is much more than a folkloric show: it is a way to experience the most authentic Trentino-Alto Adige, that of mountain villages where traditions are passed down from generation to generation. For those visiting Valsugana in December, it is an unmissable opportunity to discover the Alpine soul of Castello Tesino amidst thrills, warmth, and conviviality.
The 2026 Krampus Parade in Castello Tesino is expected during the usual December period. At the moment, the Pro Loco and the Municipality of Castello Tesino have not yet published the official dates or the program for the edition. As per tradition, the event is expected to feature the procession of Krampus from the town center to the Giardini di Via Dante, with food stalls and hot drinks. It is recommended to check the Pro Loco channels for updates.
Castello Tesino can be reached by car via the SS47 Valsugana road, taking the exit towards the Tesino plateau. The nearest train station is Grigno-Tezze on the Trento-Venice line, from where you can continue by car or bus.
The parade takes place in December, starting from Sant'Ippolito in the late afternoon and arriving at the Giardini di Via Dante. Warm clothing is recommended, and please be aware that younger children may find the event frightening.
