Summer concerts by the Musikkapelle Sexten

In the heart of the Upper Puster Valley, in the municipality of Sesto/Sexten (Autonomous Province of Bolzano, Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol), the Musikkapelle Sexten — the local brass band — accompanies the summer with a series of open-air concerts. Following the tradition of South Tyrolean brass bands (Musikkapellen), the musicians perform in their traditional costumes (Tracht), creating authentic evenings that are highly appreciated by both residents and guests vacationing in the Sesto Dolomites.

Where and when

The concerts take place at the music pavilion (Pavillon) next to the Haus Sexten, in the town center. In case of bad weather, the event is not cancelled but moved inside the Haus Sexten. Evening performances usually start in the early evening and last about an hour, in a convivial and festive village atmosphere.

The musical program

The band's repertoire is designed for a wide audience and alternates between different genres. Among the most typical pieces of the summer evenings are:

• marches and brass band music from the Tyrolean and Central European tradition;
• folk music and Volksmusik from the Alpine region;
• concert pieces, waltzes, and polkas;
• arrangements of well-known melodies and soundtracks.

In addition to the evening concerts at the pavilion, the Musikkapelle Sexten also offers a Marschkonzert (marching concert) along the Dolomitenstraße during the season, an opportunity to admire the band in motion in the town center.

A community tradition

The Musikkapellen represent a pillar of the cultural life of South Tyrolean towns: they are volunteer associations that pass on the love for brass band music, costumes, and local customs from generation to generation. In Sesto, the band is an integral part of religious, civil, and village festivals, and its summer concerts are one of the most anticipated events on the municipality's calendar.

Admission is free and the concerts are perfect for a family evening: an authentic way to discover the musical traditions of the Upper Puster Valley and to experience the atmosphere of a typical South Tyrolean mountain village, just a stone's throw from the famous Tre Cime di Lavaredo and the Sesto Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
