About Kilowatt Festival

Every July, Sansepolcro, in the heart of the Tuscan Valtiberina, transforms into the capital of the Italian contemporary scene with the Kilowatt Festival. Directed by Lucia Franchi and Luca Ricci and promoted by the CapoTrave/Kilowatt Association, the festival brings together theatre, dance, digital performances, music, and DJ sets in a packed calendar of previews, national premieres, and world premieres. The festival is also renowned for its cultural citizenship project, 'I Visionari', which entrusts the selection of part of the program to a group of local spectators.

The Kilowatt Festival

The Kilowatt Festival is one of the most recognized events on the Italian scene dedicated to contemporary performing arts. Every summer, it transforms Sansepolcro, a town in the Valtiberina area of the province of Arezzo, into a widespread laboratory of theatre, dance, music, and new stage languages. Promoted by the CapoTrave/Kilowatt Association and directed by Lucia Franchi and Luca Ricci, the festival has grown to become a benchmark for both emerging and established artists, both Italian and international.

A scene looking to the present

The heart of the proposal is contemporary creation: prose plays, dance performances, interdisciplinary projects, and digital productions alternate in an intense program, punctuated by previews, national premieres, and world premieres. Alongside theatre and dance, the festival offers concerts and late-night DJ sets that enliven the squares and courtyards of the historic centre, creating a festive atmosphere that lasts until late at night.

I Visionari, cultural citizenship

A distinctive feature of the Kilowatt Festival is the I Visionari project: a group of spectators from the Valtiberina area view hundreds of video proposals every year and select a portion of the shows on the bill. A pioneering experience of participatory programming that has set a standard in Italy and Europe, giving the public an active role in the cultural life of the territory.

The festival venues

The shows take place in the main spaces of Sansepolcro's historic centre: the Teatro alla Misericordia, the Chiostro di San Francesco, and other city squares and courtyards, including Piazza Torre di Berta. The festival is also an opportunity to discover the home of Piero della Francesca, one of the most fascinating art towns in eastern Tuscany.

International dimension

The Kilowatt Festival is part of European cultural cooperation networks, with projects such as Digital on Stage (Creative Europe) dedicated to digital performances, and collaborations with artists and companies from various countries. An international vocation that coexists with a deep rooting in the Municipality of Sansepolcro and the Tuscany Region.
