Ju Calenne: The May Tree Ritual in Tornimparte

In the heart of the Abruzzo mountains, in the municipality of Tornimparte (L'Aquila), the night of April 30th to May 1st marks the return of Ju Calenne, one of the region's most ancient and identity-defining tree rituals. The highlight for the entire community is the raising of the May Tree—a massive poplar felled in the woods and brought to the village to be planted in front of the Church of San Panfilo in the hamlet of Villagrande.

A Propitiatory Rite with Ancient Roots

Ju Calenne is a propitiatory ritual celebrating the rebirth of nature and the arrival of spring. It originated in times of scarcity, when May marked the depletion of winter food stores; the raised tree served as a symbol of hope and a good omen for future harvests. This tradition links Tornimparte to similar tree rites found throughout Italy and Europe—from Basilicata to the Umbrian-Tuscan Apennines and even Germany—testifying to a shared and ancient cultural heritage.

The Night of the Ritual

The ritual follows a precise ceremony passed down through generations. Around 9:00 PM, the maggiaioli don traditional attire and organize into teams. By 10:00 PM, the group, equipped with ropes, axes, and tools, heads stealthily into the woods; the location of the chosen tree remains a secret until the very last moment. According to ancient custom, property rights are considered suspended during this night, and a landowner can only stop the cutting if they arrive before the tree is felled. Once the poplar is selected, the men must cut it, clear it, and drag it rapidly back to the road.

The Raising and the Celebration

At midnight, in front of the Church of San Panfilo, the climax of the event takes place: the raising of Ju Calenne, with the entire community participating. A nocturnal celebration then ignites around a sacred bonfire, featuring pasta, ventresca, wine, and the sounds of the accordion and traditional Abruzzese music. During the night, the Queen of the Woods is elected, crowning a celebration that blends physical labor, shared sacrifice, and a deep sense of belonging. As they say in Tornimparte, the difference between an ordinary tree and Ju Calenne lies in the sweat and sacrifice the men put into it.

A Community Heritage

Organized by the Pro Loco of Tornimparte with the involvement of the entire village, Ju Calenne attracts residents and visitors from L'Aquila and across Abruzzo every year. More than just a folkloric event, it is a living ritual that strengthens the collective identity of the territory and passes down ancient knowledge from the young to the old, on a magical night where the woods and the sacred meet.
