The International Jazz Day at the Santa Maria della Scala in Siena
Every April 30th, the world celebrates International Jazz Day, established by UNESCO to recognize the value of this music as a universal language of dialogue and freedom. In Siena, the occasion is called J-Fest and is curated by Siena Jazz – National Jazz Academy, one of the most authoritative institutions for higher musical education in Italy and Europe in its field.
The stage is one of the city's most evocative locations: the Santa Maria della Scala museum complex, the ancient medieval hospital overlooking Piazza Duomo in the municipality of Siena. For an entire day, the museum's halls and chapels host concerts, conferences, lectures, and exhibitions, intertwining Sienese historical and artistic heritage with the vitality of contemporary jazz.
J-Fest is not just a concert, but a journey that traverses all dimensions of jazz. The morning is primarily dedicated to education, with lecture-concerts designed for schools and led by musicologists and Academy professors, who share the history of this music with new generations. The afternoon features young ensembles and orchestral workshops, while the evening is reserved for artistic productions and concerts by Siena Jazz ensembles.
The day is also accompanied by a visual dimension, with photographic and art exhibitions set up in the museum halls, and a strong international vocation, thanks to connections and exchanges with jazz institutions and festivals in other countries. Admission is free, confirming the desire to make jazz accessible to everyone: students, enthusiasts, families, and tourists.
Founded in 1977, Siena Jazz is now the National Jazz Academy and a reference point for education, research, and documentation of this music. Its presence makes Siena, a UNESCO World Heritage city, a recognized hub of Italian jazz, capable of uniting great tradition with the most current experimentation.
Participating in J-Fest means experiencing jazz in its entirety in one of the most beloved art cities in the Province of Siena and Tuscany: from school lectures to evening concerts, from exhibitions to dialogues with foreign musicians. A way to discover how jazz is still a living music today, capable of speaking to diverse audiences and building bridges between distant cultures.
The 2026 edition of J-Fest coincided with the conclusion of the JazzAble project, conceived by Siena Jazz and supported by the PNRR "Next Generation EU" funds promoted by the Ministry of University and Research for the internationalization of music academies. For the entire day, the Santa Maria della Scala complex hosted exhibitions, educational activities, conferences, and live concerts, with the participation of professors, students, and guest musicians, including international ones.
