The fire ritual in honor of the Madonna del Latte in Alife
Iu Fucaracciu is one of the most cherished traditions in Alife, a town in the province of Caserta nestled in the Volturno plain, at the foot of the Matese massif. Every spring, fifteen days after Easter, the community gathers around bonfires for a ritual that combines popular religiosity, gratitude for the land, and a sense of belonging. The name, in the local Alife dialect, simply means "the big fire": bundles of wood are collected, lit, and blessed in an ancient gesture that has spanned the centuries.
At the heart of the festival is the Madonna del Latte, venerated through a 16th-century polychrome sculpture kept in the Cathedral of Alife. By lighting the fire, the community prays to the Madonna, asking for "an abundance of milk for every mother" and generous summer harvests: an invocation with roots in the farming world of the Terra di Lavoro, where the fertility of the land and life were closely linked. The bonfire thus becomes a symbol of protection, rebirth, and hope for the entire community.
For some years now, the Pro Loco Alifana has taken on the task of planning and safeguarding this moment of gathering, bringing the fire back to the squares and courtyards of the historic center. The ritual is accompanied by a procession of wood bundles starting from the Cathedral, entertainment for children, folk music performances, and stalls featuring local products and crafts. The festival opens up to the participation of schools, associations, and citizens, transforming into a true "big family" for the territory.
The 2026 edition takes on a special meaning: the Pro Loco Alifana is celebrating its fifty years of activity (1976-2026). The traditional day of celebration is joined by a commemorative ceremony, with the presentation of scrolls to founding members, recognition for the administrations that have served over the years, and a tribute to those who have enlivened the city's cultural life. For this occasion, the fire also becomes a memory of half a century of volunteering and love for Alife.
Those who arrive for Iu Fucaracciu discover one of the most evocative locations in inland Campania: Alife preserves its Roman-era city walls, the grid layout of the ancient center, and important archaeological sites, often open to visitors during the festival. Immersed in the Matese Regional Park, the town offers rural landscapes, local products, and a gastronomy tied to the land, which provides a natural backdrop for an event capable of telling the most authentic soul of the Alto Casertano.
2026 marked a special edition of Iu Fucaracciu, intertwined with the fiftieth anniversary of the Pro Loco Alifana (1976-2026). From the morning, the center of Alife was enlivened with stalls featuring craft and food products, visits to archaeological sites, and shows for children and families. In the afternoon, the most anticipated moment: the fire ritual, with the lighting of the bundles, the blessing, and the tribute to the Madonna del Latte. In the evening, music, DJ sets, and shows concluded a day of celebration and community.
