The Italian mixed pairs bridge title at the Salsomaggiore Terme Congress Palace
The Absolute Italian Championship for Mixed Free Pairs is one of the most important events in the calendar of the FIGB - Italian Bridge Federation. It is held at the Salsomaggiore Terme Congress Palace, in the province of Parma, a venue that has been the pulsating heart of national competitive bridge for years. Here, the Federation concentrates its top events: the spa town in Emilia-Romagna is rightly considered the capital of Italian bridge, with at least four major federal events each season.
The "mixed pairs" format requires each pair to consist of a man and a woman: a specialty with its own particular charm, which rewards the understanding and balance between the two partners at the table. It is played over several days, with qualifying sessions and a final that awards the title of Italian Champion. Bridge is an internationally recognized mind sport, based on logic, memory, probability calculation, and coded communication between partners: nothing is left to chance, everything is built on strategy.
The link between Salsomaggiore Terme and the FIGB is now structural: the Congress Palace hosts not only the Italian Championships of various specialties (mixed pairs, open free pairs, teams, men's and women's), but also international events up to the World Championships. For enthusiasts, spending a few days in this elegant spa town in the Municipality of Salsomaggiore Terme means combining the passion for cards with the pleasure of a stay among historic Art Nouveau thermal baths and good Emilian cuisine.
The Mixed Pairs Championship traditionally takes place between the end of April and the first days of May, often coinciding with other absolute titles such as the Mixed Pairs Italian Cup. It is a long weekend that attracts hundreds of players from all over Italy, from major sports clubs to local circles, in an atmosphere that blends high-level competition and conviviality.
The title of Italian Mixed Pairs Champions 2026 was won by Caterina Burgio and Sebastiano Scatà, with a score of 1,066.01 (57.31%). The pair preceded Leonardo Cima and Barbara Dessì (56.25%), the reigning world champions in the mixed team event, and on the third step of the podium were Daniela Costanza Finzi and Gaspare Trapani (54.60%). For Burgio and Scatà, the victory in the pairs tournament came just a few days after the silver medal they won on May 1st in the Mixed Pairs Italian Cup, crowning an excellent week of competition at the Salsomaggiore Terme Congress Palace.
The Championship took place in multiple sessions from April 30 to May 3, 2026, at the Salsomaggiore Terme Congress Palace, with the qualifications and the final awarding the title on Sunday, May 3.
