About Ionian Carnival

The Ionian Carnival is one of the most anticipated events on the Ionian coast of Messina. Every year, between February and March, the streets of Santa Teresa di Riva come alive with allegorical floats, masked groups, and thousands of participants from seven towns along the Ionian Riviera. It is a massive popular celebration filled with color, music, satire, and spectacle, drawing record-breaking crowds and uniting entire communities in the creation of the floats.

The Carnival of the Ionian Riviera

The Ionian Carnival is the most significant carnival celebration on the Ionian coast of the province of Messina, taking place in the town of Santa Teresa di Riva, Sicily. Originally created to provide a shared event for the towns of the Ionian Riviera, it has evolved over the years into an identity-defining celebration that blends popular tradition, satire, and entertainment, attracting huge crowds along the town's main thoroughfare.

A celebration of seven towns

The unique feature of this Carnival is its inter-municipal nature: the event features allegorical floats and masked groups from seven towns along the Ionian strip of Messina, namely Santa Teresa di Riva, Sant'Alessio Siculo, Furci Siculo, Roccalumera, Nizza di Sicilia, Fiumedinisi, and Mandanici. Local associations, pro loco groups, and volunteers spend months building the floats, fostering a healthy competition that culminates in the parades and final awards ceremony.

Allegorical floats and masked groups

The heart of the festival lies in the large allegorical floats made of papier-mâché, which parade through the town streets accompanied by masked groups, choreography, and music. Themes range from current political satire to cinema characters and cartoons, from imaginative reconstructions to parodies. Each edition features several parades, including one specifically dedicated to children.

The Children's Carnival

Alongside the main parades, the program reserves plenty of space for children with the Schools' Carnival, featuring entertainment, bouncy castles, face painting, mascots, cotton candy, and shows designed for families. This is one of the most beloved aspects of the event, actively involving local schools.

A record-breaking event for the region

The Ionian Carnival is not just a celebration but also a driver for the local economy: bars, restaurants, and accommodation facilities in Santa Teresa di Riva and neighboring towns see a significant increase in visitors during the parade days. The organization, managed by the Municipality of Santa Teresa di Riva in collaboration with local associations, relies on the support of civil protection, the Red Cross, and local police to ensure safety and order throughout the festivities.

Ionian Carnival — edition 2026

The 25th edition of the Ionian Carnival, scheduled in Santa Teresa di Riva for February 2026, was cancelled following the severe damage caused by the cyclone that struck the Ionian Riviera of Messina at the beginning of the year. The event, initially planned for February 8, 15, and 17, was suspended due to exceptional circumstances. There was discussion about a potential summer version to showcase the work of the groups and float builders, but as of today, no new dates have been confirmed.

The 25th edition of the Ionian Carnival in Santa Teresa di Riva could not take place as planned. The parades were scheduled for February 8, 15, and 17, 2026, but the emergency caused by the cyclone that hit the Ionian coast of Messina led to the cancellation of the event. The event was suspended due to force majeure and not due to termination: the Carnival remains a living tradition of the territory. A possible summer recovery was hypothesized, also to avoid wasting the work of the masked groups and float builders, but no new dates have been officially confirmed at the moment.
