The itinerant sacred representation of Holy Week in the historic center of Lequile
In the period leading up to Easter, the historic center of Lequile, a small town in the province of Lecce just a few kilometers from the Salento capital, becomes the stage for one of the most heartfelt and well-attended events of the year: the Interparochial Living Passion. This itinerant sacred representation spans three evenings, retracing the fundamental stages of the final hours of Jesus' life, from the betrayal to the condemnation, the crucifixion, and the most anticipated and moving moment: the Resurrection.
The audience does not remain seated in a theater; they walk. The performance winds through the streets and squares of the village, starting from Piazza San Vito—the civic and religious heart of the town, dedicated to the patron saint—and concluding in Largo San Vito. Along the way, spectators stop in evocative courtyards, ancient churches, and historic palaces where the actors bring the various scenes of the Passion to life. It is an intense and immersive way to experience the Gospel narrative, utilizing the natural scenery of Lequile's medieval historic center with its alleys and courtyards.
The event is conceived and produced by the youth of Catholic Action from the town's two parishes, Maria SS. Assunta and Spirito Santo, with the patronage of the Municipality of Lequile. Dozens of young men and women enthusiastically and emotionally portray the Gospel characters, spending weeks preparing costumes, sets, and choreography. Each edition is accompanied by a spiritual theme that serves as a common thread; in 2026, the performance was titled «The Love that gives itself until the end».
The Living Passion is not just a show; it is a moment of sharing that involves the entire town. Local citizens themselves provide their courtyards and homes to host the scenes, supporting and welcoming the young actors. This intertwining of faith, tradition, and neighborhood life transforms the event into a true opportunity to "build community," strengthening the bonds between the two parishes and the families of Lequile.
Set in the evocative Salento village, the event is part of the rich tradition of Apulian sacred representations linked to Holy Week, a popular heritage that is very much alive in Puglia and particularly in Salento. For those visiting the area in spring, the Lequile Living Passion is the perfect opportunity to discover an authentic historic center and experience one of the deepest expressions of local popular religiosity.
During Holy Week 2026, the historic center of Lequile hosted the Interparochial Living Passion on the evenings of March 27, 28, and 30, under the title «The Love that gives itself until the end», a theme chosen by the youth of the Catholic Action from the town's two parishes. The itinerant performance started from Piazza San Vito and concluded in Largo San Vito, crossing the heart of the village and stopping in courtyards, ancient churches, and historic palaces, where the fundamental stages of the final earthly hours of Jesus up to the Resurrection were re-enacted. The initiative, carried out with the patronage of the Municipality, saw the participation of numerous actors and the collaboration of citizens, who provided their courtyards and homes.
The 2026 Living Passion was divided into three itinerant evenings in the historic center of Lequile, with the guiding theme «The Love that gives itself until the end».
