Dances, costumes, and folk music from around the world in Piazza Cota, in the heart of the Sorrento Peninsula
The International Folklore Encounters have become a staple of the summer in Piano di Sorrento, in the Metropolitan City of Naples, Campania. It is a single, vibrant, and colorful evening where the city center fills with folk groups arriving from different countries to share their community identity through music, dance, and costume. There is no competition or ranking: the organizers have chosen a format based on meeting and sharing, in the spirit that has always animated major European folklore festivals.
The heart of the event is Piazza Cota, the town's main square, which for one night becomes an open-air amphitheater surrounded by porticoes and café tables. In past editions, the evening was preceded by a procession of the groups through the city streets—starting from Piazza della Repubblica and arriving at Piazza Cota—a segment that brings the spectacle off the stage and involves anyone happening to be along the route. It always begins in the evening, around 8:00 PM, when the heat of the day has faded and the Sorrento Peninsula comes alive.
Each edition brings different ensembles to Piano di Sorrento. Over the years, groups from Bulgaria, Greece, Lithuania, Poland, and Turkey have performed, and more recently from Serbia and other Baltic countries. Each group brings to the stage:
The driving force behind the festival is the Sorrento Folk association, a local folk group known far beyond regional borders for its role as an ambassador of Neapolitan culture at international festivals. Its members do more than just organize: they open and close the evening with the Sorrento tarantella, performed with mandolins, guitars, tammorre, and castanets, in what has become the most anticipated moment for the local audience.
The festival has grown quickly: in 2024, the third edition was celebrated on July 5th, with six groups representing as many nations; in 2025, the fourth edition was held on Saturday, June 28th, again in Piazza Cota. In just a few years, the event has become a permanent fixture in the coastal summer calendar, joining the patronal feasts and food festivals that mark the season between Vico Equense, Meta, Sant'Agnello, and Sorrento.
The International Folklore Encounters are part of Estate Blu, the summer festival promoted by the municipal administration of Piano di Sorrento: four months of widespread, free-entry events, ranging from the terrace of Villa Fondi to the Marina di Cassano, squares, and hillside hamlets, featuring concerts, theater, literary meetings, and evenings dedicated to local traditions. International folklore represents the most popular and familiar soul of this program.
It is one of those events that appeals to all ages: children are enchanted by the colors of the costumes, folk music enthusiasts find repertoires difficult to hear elsewhere, and tourists discover that the tarantella is not just postcard folklore but a living tradition. All this in one of the most beautiful squares on the coast, just minutes from the sea and the viewpoints overlooking Mount Vesuvius.
On June 27, 2026, Piano di Sorrento lit up Piazza Cota again with the International Folklore Encounters, confirmed once more in the Estate Blu 2026 program. From 8:00 PM until late in the evening, the square transformed into a journey through dances, traditional costumes, folk music, and customs that tell the story of the identity of communities from different parts of the world.
The guest folk groups took turns on stage, transforming the heart of the city into a place of encounter between different cultures, traditions, and stories. The festival once again featured the Sorrento Folk association, which opened and closed the evening with the overwhelming energy of the Sorrento tarantella.
As with all Estate Blu events, access was completely free and without reservation, with an audience composed of residents, families, and tourists vacationing on the Sorrento Peninsula.
Piazza Cota (Piazza Domenico Cota), center of Piano di Sorrento, 80063 — Metropolitan City of Naples, Campania. In case of a procession, the groups meet in Piazza della Repubblica.
