International hot air balloons painting the skies of Mondovì during the Epiphany holidays
From January 3rd to 6th, 2026, the International Epiphany Hot Air Balloon Meet returns to Mondovì (province of Cuneo, Piedmont) for its 36th edition. For four days, the local skies will be filled with around thirty hot air balloons, some with unique special shapes, with crews arriving from all over Italy and several European countries. It is one of the most beloved and anticipated events of the Piedmontese winter, drawing thousands of spectators from across the region.
The bond between Mondovì and hot air balloons dates back to 1979, when the first hot air balloon registered in Italy took flight from the city, piloted by Giovanni Aimo, a pioneer of Italian aeronautics. Since then, the passion for slow flight has never waned, leading to the creation of Italy's first dedicated hot air balloon airport, the famous Balloonporto of Mondovì. The Epiphany Meet is the direct heir to this long tradition and has helped make the town an international reference point for ballooning.
The event features a mix of daytime and evening activities, all with free admission:
The Meet is designed for everyone, especially families who, during the Epiphany holidays, find a unique opportunity in Mondovì to introduce children to the world of flight. The combination of the charm of the balloons, the winter atmosphere of the historic center, and the free admission makes it one of the most successful highlights of Piedmont's Christmas calendar.
The 2026 edition, the 36th of the event, confirmed Mondovì as the Italian capital of ballooning. About thirty hot air balloons, some with special shapes, gathered on the Corso Inghilterra launch field with Italian and European crews. The most anticipated moment was the Saturday night Nightglow, with balloons inflated in the dark and illuminated to the music of the Netflix series "Stranger Things". On Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, morning and afternoon take-offs continued, along with tethered flights for children, the food zone, and creative workshops. The free event attracted thousands of visitors to Mondovì during the Epiphany holidays.
Take-offs depend on weather conditions; weather briefings are broadcast on a large screen before each flight window. No passenger flights are available for the public during the Meet.
Mondovì is easily accessible by car via the A6 Turin-Savona motorway (Mondovì exit) and by train via the Mondovì station on the Turin-Savona line. The launch field is located in Corso Inghilterra, at the edge of the city.
Free parking is available, along with a free shuttle service operating during the event days (roughly from 7:50 AM to 6:00 PM), with a loop route from Piazza della Repubblica. For campers, there is a free, non-equipped area in Via degli Artigiani.
Admission is free. Take-offs depend on weather conditions: weather briefings are broadcast on a large screen before each flight window. For information: Municipality of Mondovì, tel. +39 0174 559211, and Aeroclub Mondovì (aeroclubmondovi.it).
