An open-air classical ballet class in the square to celebrate the art of dance
Every year on April 29th, the world celebrates International Dance Day, a date established to commemorate the birth of Jean-Georges Noverre, the great reformer of ballet. In Messina, the capital of the Metropolitan City of the same name in Sicily, this day has become a popular public event thanks to the initiative of the DIS - Danza in Salute association, in collaboration with the Teatro Vittorio Emanuele Foundation.
The heart of the event is an open-air classical ballet class, held in the picturesque square in front of the Teatro Vittorio Emanuele, in the city's historic center overlooking the Strait of Messina. The class is open to students from any dance school who wish to join, as well as to casual spectators and passersby: anyone can participate or simply stop to watch. It is a way to return dance to its collective and popular roots, taking it off the stage and bringing it directly to the people.
The organizers' stated goal is to reaffirm the importance of this noble art, in harmony with the celebrations held on the same day all over the world. The DIS - Danza in Salute association was founded by Giovanna Tedesco, Gaia Gemelli, Milena Freni, and Mariangela Bonanno, professionals dedicated to spreading dance culture throughout the Messina area.
Born as a flash mob in 2025, the Messina celebration on April 29th has established itself as a fixed date on the city's calendar, with the support of the Teatro Vittorio Emanuele Foundation and the participation of numerous Sicilian dance schools. The class in the square is completely free and takes place in the late afternoon, at a time designed to involve students, families, and passersby. A simple and joyful opportunity to discover or rediscover dance in the heart of Messina.
