About ILCA Zonal Pantelleria

The Pantelleria Regatta is the island leg of the ILCA (formerly Laser) class sailing Zonal Championship, organized by the Circolo Velico Isola di Pantelleria in the stunning race course in front of the Port of Scauri. A two-day competitive event in mid-May that brings dozens of boats and sailors from across Sicily to the Black Pearl of the Mediterranean, under the patronage of the Municipality of Pantelleria and the Pantelleria Island National Park Authority.

Competitive sailing in the heart of the Mediterranean

The ILCA Zonal Championship - Pantelleria Regatta is one of the most anticipated events of the sailing season on the Black Pearl of the Mediterranean. Organized by the Circolo Velico Isola di Pantelleria, the event takes place in the spectacular waters off the Port of Scauri, in the Municipality of Pantelleria, at the westernmost tip of Sicily, in the Province of Trapani.

The event is part of the ILCA class Zonal Championship (the historic Olympic class formerly known as Laser), included in the competitive calendar of the VII Zone of the Italian Sailing Federation. The Pantelleria leg represents a true milestone for the island's sailing club, which has established itself in just a few years as a benchmark for youth and competitive sailing in the Strait of Sicily.

The Scauri race course

The races are held in the open sea in front of the Port of Scauri, a technical and fascinating race course where the famous Pantelleria wind and Mediterranean conditions test the athletes' preparation. The ILCA class boats, single-handed sailing dinghies, compete in multiple races over the weekend, under the watchful eye of the race committees and with the assistance of support boats.

  • Boats: approximately 70 ILCA class dinghies (ILCA 4, ILCA 6, ILCA 7)
  • Athletes: sailors aged 14 and up
  • Origin: sailing clubs from Marsala, Palermo, Augusta, Syracuse, and Trapani
  • Venue: waters of the Port of Scauri

An event for the local area

The regatta involves the entire island community and enjoys the patronage of the Municipality of Pantelleria and the Pantelleria Island National Park Authority, with the support of the Italian Sailing Federation. The Port Authority, the Italian Red Cross, and various local associations collaborate on safety at sea and on land. For young local sailors—including athletes like Eleonora Raffaele, Alice Chiolo, and Francesco Belvisi—it is an opportunity to compete at home against their Sicilian peers.

Sailing and island identity

The ILCA Zonal Regatta is part of a sailing season full of events that the Circolo Velico Isola di Pantelleria proposes between spring and summer, from competitive legs to the traditional Lance Pantesche regattas. For Pantelleria, a volcanic and windy island in the heart of the Strait of Sicily, sailing is a combination of sport, tourism promotion, and the enhancement of one of the most beautiful seas in the Mediterranean.

ILCA Zonal Pantelleria — edition 2026

The 2026 edition brought the 4th leg of the ILCA class Zonal Championship to Pantelleria, scheduled for Saturday, May 16, and Sunday, May 17, in the waters of the Port of Scauri. About 70 boats and sailors aged 14 and up, from Marsala, Palermo, Augusta, Syracuse, and Trapani, gathered on the Black Pearl for two days of racing supported by the Italian Sailing Federation.

IV Zonal ILCA Leg 2026

The fourth round of the ILCA class Zonal Championship was held in Pantelleria on May 16 and 17, 2026, on the race course in front of the Port of Scauri, with about 70 dinghies at the starting line. Saturday, May 16, was affected by bad weather, with waves of about two meters and mistral winds that prevented the races: the organizers offered the athletes a sightseeing tour of the island and a convivial dinner. On Sunday, May 17, the sea offered suitable conditions for the competitions, with strong winds offshore.

The event, organized by the Circolo Velico Isola di Pantelleria with the support of the Italian Sailing Federation and the patronage of the Municipality of Pantelleria and the National Park Authority, saw the collaboration of the Port Authority, the Italian Red Cross, and local associations. Among the participants were young local sailors Eleonora Raffaele, Alice Chiolo, and Francesco Belvisi.
