Pescina's mountain bike trophy, blending sport with the Marsica landscape
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Il Cammino di Berardo MTB Gran Fondo is the mountain bike event that brings Pescina to life every spring. Located in the province of L'Aquila in the heart of the Marsica region, Abruzzo, the event is organized by ASD GS Fontamara in collaboration with the Municipality of Pescina and the Italian Cycling Federation. The race perfectly balances competitive spirit with a deep connection to the territory and the landscape of the Giovenco Valley.
The track covers approximately 41 kilometers with 1,400 meters of positive elevation gain, consisting almost entirely of dirt roads with short asphalt sections. The route runs along the Giovenco River and tackles demanding climbs such as the Lupara and the ascent to the summit of Monte Faito (1,459 meters), offering panoramic views over the Fucino plain. The start is located near the center of Pescina, on Via Romolo Tranquilli.
The race is named after the Cammino di San Berardo, a historical and devotional itinerary that traverses the sites of Marsica linked to the saint. Riding along these paths means crossing a territory rich in history, nature, and tradition—elements that make the event much more than just a simple sporting competition.
In 2025, the event was part of the prestigious Abruzzo MTB Cup circuit, attracting a significant number of participants from across the region. Over the years, the race has established itself as a highly anticipated date for mountain bike enthusiasts in the province of L'Aquila and throughout Abruzzo.
Beyond the sporting aspect, Il Cammino di Berardo is an opportunity to highlight the natural beauty and landscapes of Marsica, promoting sustainable sports tourism. The Municipality of Pescina and the local community enthusiastically support the event, which brings dozens of athletes and enthusiasts to the Marsica area every year.
The 2026 edition of the Il Cammino di Berardo MTB Gran Fondo does not yet have an official date. In recent years, the race has been held in early May (May 5th in 2024, May 4th in 2025) along the trails of the Marsica, in Pescina. For the 2026 season, the Abruzzo MTB Cup circuit has revised its calendar and the Pescina stage is no longer included; we are awaiting confirmation from the organizers, ASD GS Fontamara, regarding the event's status. Information will be updated as soon as it becomes available.
Pescina can be reached by car via the A25 Rome-Pescara motorway (Pescina exit) and is connected by the Rome-Pescara railway line via the Pescina station. The race meeting point is located near the town center on Via Romolo Tranquilli.
Registration and information are managed by ASD GS Fontamara. Contacts: tel. +39 339 8977578, email [email protected]. Further details on the circuit are available at abruzzomtbcup.it.
As this is a mountain course with long stretches of dirt road, technical clothing, a mandatory helmet, adequate water supplies, and a mountain bike in excellent condition are highly recommended.
