About Il Cammino di Berardo

Il Cammino di Berardo is a mountain bike gran fondo organized in Pescina, in the Marsica region, by the ASD GS Fontamara. The 41-kilometer course features 1,400 meters of elevation gain, winding along the Giovenco River and the trails of the Cammino di San Berardo. It includes challenging dirt tracks, the Lupara climb, and the summit of Monte Faito, overlooking the Fucino Plain—a favorite among Abruzzo bikers for its mix of nature, history, and competition.

A gran fondo through the trails of Marsica

The Il Cammino di Berardo MTB Gran Fondo is the mountain bike event that brings Pescina to life every spring. Located in the province of L'Aquila in the heart of the Marsica region, Abruzzo, the event is organized by ASD GS Fontamara in collaboration with the Municipality of Pescina and the Italian Cycling Federation. The race perfectly balances competitive spirit with a deep connection to the territory and the landscape of the Giovenco Valley.

The Course

The track covers approximately 41 kilometers with 1,400 meters of positive elevation gain, consisting almost entirely of dirt roads with short asphalt sections. The route runs along the Giovenco River and tackles demanding climbs such as the Lupara and the ascent to the summit of Monte Faito (1,459 meters), offering panoramic views over the Fucino plain. The start is located near the center of Pescina, on Via Romolo Tranquilli.

The Cammino di San Berardo

The race is named after the Cammino di San Berardo, a historical and devotional itinerary that traverses the sites of Marsica linked to the saint. Riding along these paths means crossing a territory rich in history, nature, and tradition—elements that make the event much more than just a simple sporting competition.

Format and Participation

  • Competitive race reserved for traditional mountain bikes, with category and federation rankings.
  • Non-competitive cycle-touring event also open to e-bikes, following the same course but without rankings.
  • Meeting point, registration, and refreshments managed by the ASD GS Fontamara staff.

In 2025, the event was part of the prestigious Abruzzo MTB Cup circuit, attracting a significant number of participants from across the region. Over the years, the race has established itself as a highly anticipated date for mountain bike enthusiasts in the province of L'Aquila and throughout Abruzzo.

An event that showcases the territory

Beyond the sporting aspect, Il Cammino di Berardo is an opportunity to highlight the natural beauty and landscapes of Marsica, promoting sustainable sports tourism. The Municipality of Pescina and the local community enthusiastically support the event, which brings dozens of athletes and enthusiasts to the Marsica area every year.
