Christmas markets, traditions, and local flavors through the streets of Fondo down to Lake Smeraldo
Every winter, the historic center of Fondo, the main village of the Borgo d'Anaunia municipality, transforms into Il Borgo di Natale: an Advent fairy tale that merges with the most enchanting corners of the town, in the heart of Val di Non, in Trentino-Alto Adige. The streets of the village fill with wooden huts offering local crafts, gift ideas, Christmas decorations, and regional gastronomic specialties.
The charm of the event lies in its route: from the festively lit town center, a decorated path descends along the Rio Sass gorge to the evocative Lake Smeraldo, where—weather permitting—it is possible to go ice skating. Along the way, you will encounter nativity scenes, lights, and a characteristic mill housing an exhibition of wooden sculptures.
Among the most anticipated events are the snow and wood sculptures created live along the Rio Sass by local artists, who carve impressive works and, when the season allows, a life-sized nativity scene carved in ice.
Il Borgo di Natale is designed especially for families: daily creative workshops to build decorations and figurines, animated readings accompanied by the flute, clown shows, the arrival of Santa Claus with his gifts, and many themed activities. Live music and storytelling throughout the days accompany visitors as they stroll from stall to stall.
The food and wine aspect is not to be missed, featuring traditional products and the flavors of Trentino: from Advent sweets to hot dishes to enjoy while walking among the village lights. An event that highlights the identity of Val di Non and its renowned culture of apples and mountain products.
Recently established, Il Borgo di Natale has quickly become one of the most evocative Christmas events in the upper Val di Non, capable of attracting visitors from all over Trentino thanks to its fairy-tale atmosphere and the natural setting of Lake Smeraldo.
The second edition of Il Borgo di Natale was held in Fondo (Borgo d'Anaunia) from December 6, 2025, to January 4, 2026. The markets were open on December 6-8, December 13-14, and then daily from December 20 to January 4, from 10:30 AM to 7:00 PM, with closures on December 25 and January 1.
Along the Rio Sass, artists Gianni Mascotti and Paolo Moro created live snow and wood sculptures, including a life-sized nativity scene. The children's program, curated by the Pradastagn Adventure Park, offered daily creative workshops, animated flute readings, clown shows, and the arrival of Santa Claus on December 21 and 24. Live music and storytelling by Radio Anaunia accompanied the days.
Fondo (Borgo d'Anaunia) can be reached by car via the SS43 Val di Non road; it is about an hour from Trento. By train, the Trento-Malè railway arrives in Cles, then you can continue by bus. The event takes place in the historic center, with parking nearby.
Markets are generally open from 10:30 AM to 7:00 PM on operating days. Admission is free. The path to Lake Smeraldo and children's activities are free of charge.
