The Tione degli Abruzzi leg of the heritage walks in the Aterno Valley
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
"Do You Know Our Woods?" is a series of heritage walks created by the Valle Aterno Model Forest, an organization that brings together fifteen municipalities in the Aterno Valley, in the province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo. The project offers a packed calendar of excursions to discover the vast landscape and historical heritage preserved by the valley's woods. Each leg passes through a different municipality, including Tione degli Abruzzi, a small village overlooking the Sirente-Velino Regional Park.
These are not just athletic hikes. Heritage walks are slow, thematic paths where you meet administrators, farmers, foresters, naturalists, artisans, and citizens: those who walk do not just observe the landscape, but listen to its history from the voices of those who live and work in these woods every day. Ancient trails, beech forests, pagliare (traditional stone huts), plateaus, and rural landmarks become the pages of a collective story about the relationship between the community and its forest.
In Tione degli Abruzzi, the day unfolds along the trails on the northern side of the valley, amidst old and new woods and the evocative pagliare, ancient high-altitude settlements. In the 2025 edition, the Tione leg, titled "3xTrekking", took place on Sunday, October 5th, with the contribution of the Massimo Lelj Association and the Santa Maria del Ponte Association, both very active in promoting the village and its territory.
The walking series is part of the broader work of the Valle Aterno Model Forest regarding sustainable forest management, fire prevention, and biodiversity protection in the fifteen participating municipalities, including Fontecchio, Fagnano Alto, Acciano, Secinaro, Ocre, San Demetrio ne' Vestini, and Prata d'Ansidonia. The excursions are led by guides from Orsa Maggiore Trekking e Ambiente and numerous local associations, in a journey that combines slow tourism, environmental education, and the identity of Apennine villages.
The Tione degli Abruzzi leg is a perfect opportunity for those who want to get to know the Abruzzo hinterland far from mass tourism circuits: an authentic mountain territory where the forest is not just nature, but memory, work, and community.
At the moment, the Valle Aterno Model Forest has not yet released the 2026 calendar for "Do You Know Our Woods?" nor the date for the Tione degli Abruzzi leg. The project remains active: for 2026, the organization is planning other initiatives related to the trails and the community of the Aterno Valley. As soon as the heritage walk program is official, this page will be updated with the date, meeting point, and details of the Tione route.
Tione degli Abruzzi is located in the Aterno Valley, in the province of L'Aquila. By car, it can be reached from the A24/A25 motorways (L'Aquila exits) by continuing along the SS5 bis and the valley roads. The provincial capital, L'Aquila, is about 30 km away.
The heritage walks are designed for a wide audience but include sections on mountain trails: trekking shoes, water, and clothing appropriate for the season are recommended. Booking is generally required.
