The Maremma travelling festival stops at the Rocca degli Alberti
I Luoghi del Tempo is one of the most beloved and iconic cultural events in the Tuscan Maremma: a travelling festival that, for over fifteen years, has guided audiences through the discovery of villages, medieval fortresses, historic villas, archaeological sites, and landscapes often far from mass tourism. The concept is simple yet powerful: to bring theatre, original music, literature, and storytelling to the most evocative settings in the province of Grosseto and the Colline Metallifere, turning every location into a natural stage.
Organised by the M.Arte Association with the support of the Tuscany Region, the Colline Metallifere National Park, and the Maremma library network, the festival takes place annually between late May and mid-June, visiting numerous municipalities with a series of evening events. Each evening pairs a prominent figure from Italian culture with an exceptional landscape and a convivial moment dedicated to local flavours.
Among the most fascinating stops on the tour is Monterotondo Marittimo, a municipality in the province of Grosseto nestled in the Colline Metallifere, a land of geysers, steam vents, and ancient mines. Here, the festival is hosted at the Rocca degli Alberti, the place where the medieval village originated: a fortress built and inhabited since the Middle Ages by the Alberti di Magona family, which overlooks the town and tells centuries of Tuscan history.
The evening in Monterotondo Marittimo is traditionally dedicated to theatre, music, and literature, with major names from the Italian scene taking the stage. The artists' words engage with the ancient stone of the fortress and the surrounding landscape in an intimate, collected atmosphere, far from the bustle of large-scale events.
Beyond Monterotondo Marittimo, the festival editions visit numerous towns in the Maremma and Colline Metallifere, including Castiglione della Pescaia, Civitella Paganico, Gavorrano, Roccastrada, Scarlino, Santa Fiora, Follonica, and the archaeological area of Cosa in Ansedonia. This travelling format has become the hallmark of the event and an original way to promote the cultural, historical, and environmental identity of southern Tuscany.
I Luoghi del Tempo is much more than a cultural festival: it is a way of telling the story of the Maremma and its communities through landscape, memory, and art, making even the most charming villages like Monterotondo Marittimo the protagonists.
The sixteenth edition of the I Luoghi del Tempo festival, scheduled throughout the Maremma from May 29 to June 17, 2026, stops in Monterotondo Marittimo on Friday, June 5, at the evocative Rocca degli Alberti. The evening is entirely dedicated to a tribute to Paolo Poli, the unforgettable Florentine actor and man of the theatre, weaving together theatre, words, and original music in one of the most scenic settings of the Colline Metallifere.
The event is part of the travelling format that has always distinguished the festival, organised by the M.Arte Association with the support of the Tuscany Region, the Vieusseux Cabinet of Florence, and the Maremma library network.
As part of the festival, the "Bibliobus – Books travel in the places of time" initiative is also active, allowing you to borrow books from the Grobac Network libraries.
The event takes place at the Rocca degli Alberti, in the historic centre of Monterotondo Marittimo (province of Grosseto, Tuscany), in the heart of the Colline Metallifere.
By car: Monterotondo Marittimo can be reached via the SS398 Val di Cornia road or the provincial roads crossing the Colline Metallifere; the village is about an hour from Grosseto and a little more from Follonica. The nearest train stations are Follonica and Campiglia Marittima, from where you can continue by car.
Full price 8 euros, reduced 7 euros for Carta Insieme Conad holders. Online pre-sales on the 18tickets circuit. Information: [email protected].
We recommend comfortable clothing and suitable footwear for the village and fortress paths, as the evening takes place outdoors. Arriving a little early allows you to enjoy the view from the highest point of the town.
