The automotive slalom race through the badlands of the Acquese region
The I Calanchi di Montechiaro d'Acqui Superslalom is an automotive slalom race held in Montechiaro d'Acqui, a small town in the Province of Alessandria, in the heart of the Acquese area and southern Monferrato. The event takes its name from the striking calanchi (badlands), the clay formations that define the hilly landscape surrounding the village and frame a technical and selective 3-kilometer course.
Launched in 2025, the race has quickly become a highly anticipated event for motorsport fans in Piedmont. Organized by Supergara A.S.D. in collaboration with Polisportiva Montechiaro, the event is part of the official Italian slalom calendar and is valid for the ACI Sport Zone 1 Cup. The slalom attracts drivers from across the North-West, who test their skills against the clock on a track made even more challenging by the steep gradients and hairpin bends typical of these hilly roads.
One of the most appreciated features of the event is the mix of modern vehicles and historic cars: from extreme prototypes to competition-ready economy cars like the Fiat 500 and 600, all the way to all-wheel-drive sedans. The presence of teams that also provide opportunities for young drivers makes this slalom a great training ground for grassroots motorsport, as well as a thrilling spectacle for the public.
The program extends beyond the Sunday time trial. The opening day on Saturday features a gathering of historic and modern sports cars, a non-competitive road tour, and the traditional presentation dinner accompanied by music, which enlivens the town center and brings together residents and visitors. It is a convivial moment that blends a passion for engines with the community life of Montechiaro d'Acqui.
Perched at an altitude of over 500 meters in the hills of the Alto Monferrato, Montechiaro d'Acqui is a village of a few hundred inhabitants that fills with spectators, drivers, and curious onlookers during the slalom weekend. Its proximity to Acqui Terme and the wine routes of the Acquese area allows visitors to combine a day of sport with an enogastronomic discovery of south-eastern Piedmont.
The overall victory went to Marco Strata in a Skoda Fabia Evo. In the various classes, Massimiliano Vogogna (Fiat Seicento Sporting, Novara Corse) stood out, winning the modern category with a time of 3'04"79 in the second heat, and Riccardo Ravizza (Fiat Cinquecento Trofeo), who took first place in the historic class on his debut without penalties. The race was held entirely on wet asphalt.
Montechiaro d'Acqui can be reached by car from nearby Acqui Terme and from the nearest motorway exit in the lower Piedmont network. During the race, some town streets are closed to traffic: it is recommended to follow the signage and the organizers' instructions for parking.
Sporting checks take place in Piazza della Ciminiera, while technical inspections are held in Piazza Europa. The awards ceremony is held in Piazza della Ciminiera at the end of the race.
