Three days of flavor, culture, and entertainment dedicated to chili peppers at the Garden Tre Fontane in the EUR district.
HOTtobre Piccante is the event that brings the culture of the chili pepper in all its forms to Rome, the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, and the Lazio region every autumn. The venue is the Garden Tre Fontane at Via Laurentina 90, a large nursery in the EUR-Montagnola district that transforms for three days into a vibrant path of stands, tasting tables, stages, and outdoor exhibition areas. The organization is managed by Ipse Dixit, the Roman delegation of the Italian Chili Pepper Academy, an association that has spent years promoting the knowledge of this spicy berry as an agricultural product, a healthy food, and a gastronomic heritage shared across the entire peninsula.
The visual heart of the festival is the international chili pepper exhibition: over two hundred and twenty varieties from every continent, cultivated and arranged with botanical and educational precision. The collection ranges from familiar Mediterranean cultivars to tropical super-hots with names now famous among enthusiasts, complete with information cards detailing their origin, heat level, and culinary uses. It is a journey that works just as well for the expert visitor as it does for those approaching the world of spice for the first time, discovering that the chili pepper is not just about heat tolerance, but about aroma, fragrance, and rural culture.
A packed program of events revolves around the exhibition. Show cooking sessions feature chefs preparing chili peppers in traditional Calabrian, Roman, and Mediterranean recipes; guided tastings pair sauces, preserves, cured meats, cheeses, and Southern wines with the expertise of professional sommeliers. There is no shortage of the more lighthearted moments that have become a trademark of this Roman event over the years:
HOTtobre Piccante goes beyond the plate. The program includes thematic conferences and round tables with doctors, agronomists, and scholars on the nutritional properties of capsaicin, as well as book presentations, art exhibitions, and live music. On weekends, vintage car parades and displays by historic Roman clubs add a nostalgic touch to the setting. The formula is that of a popular urban festival: entry is free, you can stroll among the plants, taste, listen, and happily linger until the evening.
The spacious, largely outdoor location makes the festival suitable for those arriving with children or dogs. The nursery provides ample free parking, a refreshment area, and facilities, while the exhibitors—averaging around thirty, including producers of sauces, preserves, craft beers, and typical products from Southern Italy—allow visitors to purchase directly from the makers. For many Romans, it has become the autumn occasion to stock up on quality spice before winter.
The chili pepper is traditionally associated with Calabria, and indeed the Calabrian component is strong in Rome as well, with the Premio Calabria awarded each year to agri-food companies from the region. However, the capital has a long history of southern communities and a cuisine—like the Roman arrabbiata and amatriciana—that has made the spicy kick a defining trait. HOTtobre Piccante tells the story of this meeting of traditions in a city that rediscovers bold flavors as an opportunity for social connection every autumn.
From October 2 to 4, 2026, the Garden Tre Fontane at Via Laurentina 90, Rome, hosts the eighth edition of HOTtobre Piccante, the capital's Chili Pepper Festival organized by the Roman delegation of the Italian Chili Pepper Academy, Ipse Dixit. Three days of flavor, music, and fun in the EUR district, with free admission.
The structure of the event remains the one that led to its success: the record-breaking exhibition with over two hundred chili varieties from around the world, show cooking, tastings with producers, scientific events and book presentations, round tables among experts, and the awards ceremony for the Poesie Piccanti 2026 literary contest. The presence of vintage car clubs, now part of the festival's landscape, is also confirmed.
The detailed program with schedules, guests, and the calendar of competitions will be published by the organizers in the weeks preceding the event on the association's website and on the social media channels of Ipse Dixit and the Garden Tre Fontane.
The Garden Tre Fontane is located at Via Laurentina 90, in the EUR-Montagnola district of Rome. By car, it can be reached via Via Laurentina or the Grande Raccordo Anulare (Laurentina exit), with ample free parking on-site. By public transport: take Metro Line B to the Laurentina terminus, then a bus connection along Via Laurentina.
Admission to the event is free. The festival generally takes place over three days, with afternoon opening on Friday and continuous hours on Saturday and Sunday from morning until evening. Tastings and products from exhibitors are available for purchase.
The area is largely outdoors: comfortable shoes and a light jacket for the evening are recommended. The event is pet-friendly and suitable for families. For those wishing to participate in the spicy contests, registration on-site in the hours leading up to the challenge is recommended.
