The ancient spring fair of Castelnovo di Sotto, featuring horses, peasant traditions, and Reggio Emilia flavors
The Horse Fair is one of the most deeply rooted events in the calendar of Castelnovo di Sotto, a municipality in the province of Reggio Emilia located in the lower Emilia plain, in Emilia-Romagna. Listed in the official calendar of fairs of the Emilia-Romagna Region, it traditionally takes place around the second Sunday of April and transforms the town's historic center into a large open-air festival space, along Via Gramsci, Viale Marconi, and Piazza IV Novembre.
The fair is rooted in the ancient passion that the town holds for the equestrian world. Castelnovo di Sotto was indeed the birthplace of famous trotting "drivers" such as William Casoli, Sergio Brighenti, and Paolo Iemmi, who made the history of this discipline at national and international levels. The symbolic heart of the event is the "battesimo della sella" (saddle baptism), designed for children: an opportunity to get acquainted with horse riding and to feel like little riders for a day.
The streets of the center are filled with attractions and stalls for all ages:
The gastronomic section is one of the fair's strong points. At the "Rotonda del gusto" (Roundabout of taste), managed by local association volunteers, you can enjoy gnocco fritto, ciccioli (pork cracklings), and zero-kilometer agricultural products. There are also wine tastings promoted by local wineries and demonstrations of Parmigiano Reggiano production, a symbol of the Reggio Emilia territory. All this in a popular and family-friendly atmosphere that attracts thousands of visitors every year from Castelnovo di Sotto and neighboring towns.
More than just a fair, the Horse Fair is a gathering moment for the entire Castelnovo community: local shops stay open, associations get involved, and the town celebrates its peasant and equestrian roots. It is on this occasion that, every year, registrations for local sports activities also open.
The 2026 Horse Fair was held in Castelnovo di Sotto (Reggio Emilia) from Friday, April 10 to Monday, April 13, 2026, with hours from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday and Monday, and from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM on the weekend. The event took place along Via Gramsci, Viale Marconi, and Piazza IV Novembre, animating the town center with the funfair, the special market, and numerous activities organized by local associations.
Among the most anticipated moments were the traditional "battesimo della sella" for children, the peasant village with vintage tractors in the Rocca park, and the "Giochi di un tempo" (Games of the past). At the "Rotonda del gusto," volunteers offered gnocco fritto, ciccioli, and zero-kilometer products, alongside wine tastings and a demonstration of Parmigiano Reggiano production.
Typical program of the event, spread over the four days:
By car: Castelnovo di Sotto is accessible from the A1 motorway, exit at Reggio Emilia, then continue north towards the Bassa Reggiana (about 15 km from the provincial capital).
By train: the reference station is Reggio Emilia, connected to the town by intercity bus lines.
Admission to the fair is free. The event takes place on April days, opening in the late afternoon on weekdays and all day on weekends.
It is advisable to arrive on foot in the historic center, where the streets are closed to traffic during the fair. Don't miss the "Rotonda del gusto" to taste gnocco fritto and typical products from the Reggio Emilia area.
