Easter processions in the Arab-Norman village of Zabut
Every spring, in the village of Sambuca di Sicilia (province of Agrigento), Holy Week turns the historic center into a grand stage for popular devotion. The ancient streets of the Arab quarter of Zabut, with its characteristic dead-end alleys (the vaneddi), provide the backdrop for processions and rites passed down through generations in one of the towns recognized as among the 'Most Beautiful Villages in Italy'.
The heart of the rites is Good Friday. In the afternoon, around 3:30 PM, the procession of the statue of Maria Santissima Addolorata begins, traveling from the Church of Gesù e Maria to the Mother Church (Matrice), accompanied by the solemn notes of the "Gian Matteo Rinaldo" marching band. The day continues with sermons, the re-enactment of the Passion, and the Deposition from the Cross. In the evening, the moving procession of the Dead Christ winds through the village streets, marking the most intense and reflective moment of the entire Holy Week.
The celebrations involve the churches of the historic center—including the Chiesa del Carmine, a sanctuary housing the statue of the Madonna dell'Udienza by Gagini, the Mother Church with its bell tower covered in polychrome majolica, and the Chiesa di Gesù e Maria. The local brotherhoods and parishes manage the organization of the rites, which blend religious observance with the identity of the Sambuca community.
The rites do not end on Good Friday: the Holy Week of Sambuca di Sicilia accompanies the faithful through Easter Sunday and Easter Monday, with celebrations that conclude the Paschal cycle. For those visiting this corner of the province of Agrigento and inland Sicily, witnessing these processions means connecting with an authentic tradition, far from the major tourist circuits.
The 2026 Easter rites opened on Good Friday, April 3. This was followed by sermons, the re-enactment of the Passion, and the Deposition from the Cross.
The rites continued until Easter Monday, April 6, concluding the Sambuca Holy Week cycle.
Easter celebrations continue in the churches of the historic center until Easter Monday.
