Ancient Easter processions in the village of the Monti Dauni
Every spring, the village of Troia, nestled in the hills of the Monti Dauni in the province of Foggia, relives one of the most intense and heartfelt Easter rituals in Puglia. From Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, the streets of the historic centre transform into a theatre of popular faith, where centuries-old processions, chants, and the sombre sound of chains accompany the commemoration of the Passion, death, and resurrection of Christ.
The tradition has its roots in the early 18th century. After an earthquake and a severe epidemic, Bishop Emilio Giacinto Cavalieri, who arrived in Troia around 1694, established the Confraternity of the Stigmata of Saint Francis to address the population's spiritual crisis. Since 1702, the unique processional rites that still characterise the Troia Holy Week have been passed down, guarded with devotion by the local confraternities.
The cycle begins with the Living Passion, a sacred costumed performance that re-enacts the Passion and Death of Jesus Christ. The procession starts from the Church of the Madonna della Mediatrice, with the trial scene, and winds through the town to the Toppo San Giacomo area, where the crucifixion takes place.
The most solemn day is Good Friday. In the morning, the famous Procession of the Chains takes place: five penitents dressed in white and hooded, barefoot, carry heavy wooden crosses on their shoulders while dragging long chains. Starting from the Church of San Basilio Magno, the procession reaches the Church of Sant'Anna, stopping before the Blessed Sacrament in the churches along the route, while the chains and the sharp rhythm of the 'troccole' (wooden clappers) resound. By tradition, the penitents renew this penance for five consecutive years.
In the evening, the scenic Procession of the Mysteries moves from the square in front of the Cathedral: five groups of statues, copies of the 18th-century originals kept in the Diocesan Museum, represent the Capture, the Crowning with Thorns, the Flagellation, the First Fall, and the Crucifixion. The procession also accompanies the statue of the Dead Christ and a precious wooden Our Lady of Sorrows attributed to the sculptor Giacomo Colombo.
The joy of the resurrection explodes in the Procession of the Kiss, a rite unique in Puglia. The statues of the Madonna and the Saviour, having set off from different churches, approach each other several times until they meet in front of the Cathedral: the Risen Christ bows in a moving symbolic kiss to his Mother, amidst the emotion of the faithful and the festive notes that greet Easter.
The Holy Week Rites represent the deepest identity of the Municipality of Troia and one of the intangible treasures of the Monti Dauni. Admired by the faithful and visitors alike, this three-century-old tradition combines sacred art, papier-mâché, music, and popular devotion, offering those arriving from outside the region an authentic experience of the deep religious sentiment of northern Puglia.
The 2026 Holy Week in Troia followed the liturgical calendar with Palm Sunday on March 29 and Easter Sunday on April 5. The highlight was Good Friday, April 3, with the Procession of the Chains in the morning, from the Church of San Basilio Magno to that of Sant'Anna, and the Procession of the Mysteries in the evening from the Cathedral.
The cycle concluded on Easter Sunday afternoon with the evocative Procession of the Kiss in front of the Cathedral. The rites were organised by the Diocese of Lucera-Troia together with the local confraternities.
Troia is located about 20 km from Foggia. By car, it can be reached via the SS546 or from the Foggia exit of the A14 and A16 motorways. By train, the reference station is Foggia, connected to Troia by local bus lines.
The rites take place during Holy Week, from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday (dates vary according to the liturgical calendar).
The processions take place along the streets of the historic centre and are free to attend. Comfortable clothing and respect for the religious atmosphere are recommended.
