The Holy Week rites featuring children adorned in gold accompanying the Holy Crucifix

In the heart of the Tyrrhenian side of Sicily, the small town of San Pier Niceto, in the province of Messina, preserves one of the most original and moving Holy Week rites on the island. Its roots reach back into a past so distant that it cannot be precisely dated, yet the devotion that fuels it is renewed every year, involving the entire community.
The most anticipated moment is the Holy Tuesday Procession, dedicated to the ancient Holy Crucifix kept in the church of San Giacomo. During Lent, many families vow to dress their children as angelic figures, divided into three categories: angioletti (three or four-year-olds), angioloni (older children), and monachelle (young girls). Parents knock on every door in town to borrow gold bracelets, pins, necklaces, and trinkets, which they use to completely cover the children's outfits; the valuables are returned immediately after the procession in a collective gesture of trust and faith.
In the afternoon, around 4:30 PM, three cannon shots, the ringing of church bells, and a march played by the municipal band signal the start of the procession. Red ribbons tied to the arms of the Crucifix mark the route, while the children, accompanied by their parents, the parish priest, altar servers, and hundreds of faithful carrying votive candles, parade slowly amidst red roses and cypress branches.
Complementing the rites, in recent years the local cultural association has proposed initiatives such as the photo exhibition I giorni degli Angeli (The Days of the Angels), dedicated to historical and recent images of the tradition. The Holy Week of San Pier Niceto is today an intangible heritage that tells the soul of this village in the Sicily Region, where popular devotion intertwines with the proud identity of an entire community.
For the 2026 edition, no official dates or program have been published yet. The Holy Week of San Pier Niceto (province of Messina) will follow the liturgical Easter calendar as it does every year: the Procession of the Golden Angels on Holy Tuesday, with children covered in golden jewelry accompanying the Holy Crucifix, and the Procession of the Barette on Good Friday. Information will be updated as soon as the Municipality and the parish release the final program.
San Pier Niceto is located in the province of Messina, in north-eastern Sicily. By car, it can be reached via the A20 Messina–Palermo motorway (exit at Milazzo or Falcone), then continuing inland. The nearest train station is Milazzo, on the Messina–Palermo line.
The rites take place during Holy Week, generally in April (dates vary each year based on Easter). The Procession of the Golden Angels is held on Holy Tuesday, and the Procession of the Barette on Good Friday.
Access to the processions is free and open to all. Modest attire is recommended, as these are religious celebrations.
