Passion rites in the heart of central Sicily
In Barrafranca, a small town in the province of Enna in the heart of central Sicily, Holy Week is not just a religious appointment but the very identity of the community. For eight days, from Holy Wednesday to Easter Sunday, the historic center comes alive with processions, sacred performances, and rites passed down through generations, blending popular faith, theater, and tradition. Both main events, U Trunu and the Giunta Pasquale, have been included in the Sicilian Region's Book of Celebrations, and since 2012, the Barrafranca Easter has been part of the "Italian Wonder" project.
The first major event is 'A Vasacra, scheduled for Holy Wednesday. It is an itinerant sacred performance of the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, performed in the local Barrafranca dialect, featuring over two hundred actors in period costumes. The procession, preceded by a military parade with Roman legions and militias, tribunes, and officials, winds through the streets and squares of the town, unfolding in multiple stations: the Garden of Gethsemane, the Sanhedrin of Caiaphas, Pilate's palace, and the crucifixion on Golgotha, the climactic scene illuminated by torches.
On the evening of Good Friday, the procession of the Holy Crucifix takes place, which the locals call U Trunu (the "throne" of triumph). The statue of Christ, covered in gold votive offerings and adorned with colorful bows and ribbons donated by the faithful as a sign of devotion, is carried on the shoulders of numerous devotees through the village streets in an atmosphere of profound participation. The day begins in the morning with the procession of Our Lady of Sorrows.
The most joyful moment arrives on Easter Sunday, around noon, with 'A Giunta: in the main square, the encounter takes place between the statue of the Risen Christ and that of the Madonna, accompanied by gigantic papier-mâché statues representing the Apostles. Saint Peter, John, and Thomas perform ritual searches until the statues, after approaching several times, reunite amidst the emotion and joy of the crowd.
Among the rites is the tradition of Holy Thursday, when the faithful visit the sabburca, the sepulchers set up in the town's churches—including the Church of the Madonna delle Grazie and the Church of Santa Maria la Stella—decorated with fabrics, plants, sprouted wheat, and flowers.
Organized by the Pro Loco and the Municipality of Barrafranca, the Holy Week is today one of the main cultural and religious attractions of the province of Enna and the entire central Sicily. An authentic experience for those who want to discover the Sicilian Easter in its most popular and theatrical form.
The rites of the Holy Week of Barrafranca were held from March 29 to April 5, 2026. On Holy Wednesday, April 1, 'A Vasacra was performed, the itinerant sacred representation with over two hundred costumed actors. On Good Friday, April 3, the procession of the Holy Crucifix, U Trunu, took place in the evening, while on Easter Sunday, April 5, around noon, the Giunta Pasquale was celebrated with the encounter between the Risen Christ and the Madonna in the main square, accompanied by the gigantic statues of the Apostles.
Barrafranca is located in the province of Enna, in the heart of Sicily.
