Sacred representation of the Passion and the Deposition from the Cross
In Sommatino, a small village in the province of Caltanissetta in the heart of central Sicily, Holy Week represents the most intense and anticipated tradition of the year. For one week, the historic center transforms into a large open-air theater, where popular faith and sacred performance merge into a rite passed down through generations. The highlight is La Scinnenza (Sicilian for "the descent"), the sacred representation of the deposition of Jesus from the Cross.
The origins of the Scinnenza date back to the early 19th century. The performance is inspired by the Riscatto di Adamo nella morte di Gesรน Cristo by Filippo Orioles, commonly known as Mortorio, a text that has fueled many sacred Passion plays in Sicily. Actors in costume retrace the key stages of the Passion of Christ, from the entry into Jerusalem to the deposition and burial.
Sommatino was long known as "the town of sulfur": the Trabia-Tallarita mine was one of the oldest and richest sulfur mines on the island. This mining past is still alive in the tradition: the Urn of the dead Christ is carried by former miners in their work clothes, who form the Urn committee. Their austere and moving presence inextricably links the memory of underground labor to the sacrifice represented in the rites.
The Scinnenza is organized and performed by the Associazione Teatrale Insieme per un Sogno together with the Gruppo Scinnenza, which is enriched every year by new members and young people ready to carry on a tradition made of faith, commitment, and heart. The tradition evolves by welcoming new energy without ever losing its deepest meaning: shared faith, handed-down memory, and the passion that ignites in the participants.
Together with the rites of other centers in the province, the Holy Week of Sommatino is considered one of the most characteristic in Sicily. For those visiting the Municipality of Sommatino during these days, the experience is also enriched by the local heritage, from the Mother Church of Santa Margherita to the Sulfur Mine Museum of the Trabia-Tallarita mine.
The rites took place from March 29 to April 4, 2026, organized by the Associazione Insieme per un Sogno with the Gruppo Scinnenza. On Palm Sunday, the performance began at 7:30 PM at the Domus Misericordiae, staging the entry into Jerusalem, the Sanhedrin, the Last Supper, the Garden of Gethsemane, and the arrest.
On Good Friday, April 3, the procession of actors started at 11:00 AM; at noon, the main procession crossed Corso Umberto I with the scourging and the condemnation in Pilate's praetorium; at 8:30 PM, the dramatic scenes of Calvary were staged with the deposition from the Cross and the lament of Mary. The Urn of the dead Christ was carried, as per tradition, by former miners in their work clothes.
Sommatino is located in central Sicily, in the province of Caltanissetta. By car, it can be reached via the SS640 (Agrigento-Caltanissetta) and the provincial roads of the area. The most convenient train station is Caltanissetta, from where you can continue by bus or car.
The rites take place during Holy Week, culminating on Good Friday. The dates vary each year according to the liturgical calendar.
Participation in the rites and processions is free and open to everyone.
Arrive early on Good Friday to secure a good viewing spot along Corso Umberto I and in the square. Wear comfortable clothing and respect the solemnity of the faithful.
