The Good Friday procession in the heart of the Madonie mountains

In the heart of Holy Week, the village of Montemaggiore Belsito, in the province of Palermo, experiences its most profound moment with "A Cunnutta", the solemn Good Friday procession. It is a ritual that blends faith, folk tradition, and Sicilian culture, drawing the entire community together in an atmosphere of deep reflection.
On Good Friday evening, following the liturgy, the effigy of the Dead Christ is carried on the shoulders of local youths through the streets of the historic center, dressed in dark suits as a sign of mourning. They are followed by the statue of the Addolorata, the grieving mother of Jesus, accompanied by the Circoline, women dressed in black. The local brass band accompanies the procession with funeral marches and poignant chants, while the church bells remain silent. It is a moment described by locals as "deeply moving to the soul," serving as a prelude to the joy of Easter Sunday.
Celebrations begin on Palm Sunday with the blessing of olive branches and a procession commemorating Christ's entry into Jerusalem. Following this are the liturgical days of Monday and Tuesday, dedicated to spiritual preparation, and the Way of the Cross on Wednesday, one of the most significant days, winding through the village streets. Holy Thursday is marked by the Mass of the Lord's Supper and the traditional visit to the sepolcri, the altars of repose set up in the churches. Good Friday is the heart of the week with "A Cunnutta," while Holy Saturday leads to the Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday celebrates the Resurrection with processions of the Risen Christ and traditional Sicilian feasts.
Organized by the Sant'Agata V.M. Parish, the Holy Week of Montemaggiore Belsito represents a unique fusion of faith and collective identity, passed down through generations. The Madonie village, set among the hills of the Palermo hinterland, preserves the value of these rites, which remain among the most authentic expressions of Sicilian popular religiosity. The sobriety of the ritual and the spontaneous participation of the inhabitants make "A Cunnutta" an event awaited not only by the faithful but by anyone wishing to rediscover the cultural roots of inland Sicily.
The 2026 edition of the Holy Week in Montemaggiore Belsito will feature the traditional rites of the Madonie community, culminating in the "A Cunnutta" procession on Good Friday, with the effigy of the Dead Christ and the Addolorata accompanied by the brass band. The dates and full program for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially published: the calendar will be released by the Sant'Agata V.M. Parish in the weeks leading up to Easter.
Montemaggiore Belsito is located in the hinterland of the Metropolitan City of Palermo, on the slopes of the Madonie mountains. By car, it can be reached via the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (Scillato or Caltavuturo exit) and the SS120 road. The Montemaggiore-Roccapalumba train station is served by the Palermo-Agrigento line.
The rites take place in the village's historic center and at the Mother Church of Sant'Agata V.M. during Holy Week (between late March and April, depending on the liturgical calendar). The "A Cunnutta" procession takes place on the evening of Good Friday.
Participation in the rites and processions is free and open to all. Modest attire and a respectful demeanor are requested, as these are religious celebrations.
