Passion rites in the hexagonal city of the Calatino area

In the heart of the Calatino area, in the province of Catania, Grammichele preserves one of the most heartfelt religious traditions in Eastern Sicily. During Holy Week, the entire community gathers around the rites of the Passion, transforming the city's streets and squares into a grand theatre of popular faith. The setting is unique: Grammichele was founded in 1693 by Prince Carlo Maria Carafa Branciforte after the earthquake that destroyed the ancient town of Occhiolร , following an extraordinary urban plan in the shape of a hexagon, with a large central square from which six streets branch out. It is along this stage that the processions unfold.
The highlight is the Good Friday procession, dedicated to the Dead Christ and Our Lady of Sorrows. The two statues, kept in the Church of Maria SS. Addolorata, are carried in a procession starting from the evocative Calvary Church at the end of Corso Roma, a building standing next to a former Franciscan monastery. The procession, accompanied by the band's funeral marches and local confraternities, moves through the historic centre in an atmosphere of intense reflection. In some years, confraternities from neighbouring towns also participate, a sign of a devotional bond that transcends city limits.
The rites do not end on Good Friday. Traditional events include:
The festivities are managed by local religious and community groups, including the Cristo alla Colonna association, the confraternities of the Santissimo Sacramento, the Anime Purganti, and the Passione, as well as the association of devotees of San Michele and Santa Caterina, in collaboration with local parishes. For those visiting Sicily in spring, the Holy Week of Grammichele is a precious opportunity to discover the popular faith of the Calatino area within one of Italy's most surprising urban layouts.
The 2026 edition of the Holy Week in Grammichele will feature the usual cycle of Passion rites that have animated the historic centre of the hexagonal city of the Calatino area for generations. The focus will be, as always, the Good Friday procession with the statues of the Dead Christ and Our Lady of Sorrows.
As of the writing of this page, the dates and detailed programme for the 2026 edition have not yet been published. The full calendar (procession times, musical events, routes in the historic centre) is usually released by the confraternities and parishes in the weeks leading up to Easter. We recommend checking the official channels of the Municipality and the parishes of Grammichele for updates.
Grammichele is located in the province of Catania, in the Calatino area. By car, it can be reached via the SS417 Catania-Gela road. The nearest train station is in Catania, from where you can continue by bus or car.
The rites take place during Holy Week, between March and April, according to the movable liturgical calendar of Easter. The main procession is the Good Friday one, held in the evening.
The processions are free and open to everyone. Comfortable clothing is recommended for following the parade through the historic centre, and please respect the religious atmosphere. Traffic in the centre is restricted during the days of the rites.
