The patronal feast of Palagonia, blending faith, ancient rites, and folk tradition
The Saint Febronia Festival is the most anticipated event of the year in Palagonia, a town in the Sicilian hinterland located on the Catania Plain. Dedicated to the virgin and martyr Saint Febronia, the town's patron saint and protector, the festival is traditionally held between June 24 and July 2 and represents the heart of Palagonia's religious and popular identity.
The cult of the saint arrived in Palagonia between the late 16th and early 17th centuries, following the arrival of a relic and several events considered miraculous. Since then, the community has embraced her as its patron, building a heritage of rites and traditions over the centuries that are still passed down unchanged from generation to generation.
The calendar of celebrations alternates between moments of intense religious devotion and popular festivities. Among the most characteristic rites:
From June 26 to July 2, the octave takes place, featuring daily celebrations and processions visiting the town's main churches, from the Madonna di Trapani Church to the San Giuseppe Church. The festival concludes on July 2 with morning and evening processions, a midday stop, and a grand civic celebration in Piazza Garibaldi before the fercolo returns to the Mother Church.
Alongside religious functions, the civic program organized by the Municipality of Palagonia and the Pro Loco offers musical and folk performances, dance group exhibitions, the traditional "Saint Febronia banquet" with local product tastings, illuminations, market stalls, and a fireworks display. It is also an occasion for many Palagonia emigrants to return home: it is no coincidence that the saint is also celebrated in August with the "emigrants' festival".
The Saint Febronia Festival is not just a religious event, but an authentic identity ritual that tells the soul of Palagonia and the deepest part of Sicily, where the sacred and the popular merge in a choral celebration that has been renewing itself for over four centuries.
The 2026 Saint Febronia Festival runs from June 24 to July 2. On June 24, the eve, the Mother Church hosts the traditional "spaccata 'o pignu" and the opening of the saint's chapel, with the fercolo brought to the churchyard to greet the faithful.
On June 25, the day of the feast, the morning mass with the blessing of the girls' votive garments, the triumphal exit of the fercolo, the bell auction, and the procession along the streets of the historic center to the Madonna di Trapani Church are planned. During the octave, the pilgrimage to Contrada Coste takes place towards the ancient Byzantine hermitage of Saint Febronia. On July 2, the morning and evening processions, the stop at the San Giuseppe Church, and the celebration in Piazza Garibaldi close the festivities.
The civic program curated by the Municipality and the Pro Loco of Palagonia includes dance shows, musical performances, the "Saint Febronia banquet" with tastings, and the final fireworks display.
