The centuries-old Miracula procession in the Madonie village of Gangi
In the heart of the Madonie mountains, within the Metropolitan City of Palermo, the village of Gangi โ a member of the 'Most Beautiful Villages in Italy' circuit โ preserves one of the most intense and spectacular religious traditions of inland Sicily: the Holy Spirit Festival. Celebrated on the Monday after Pentecost, it has marked the spiritual life and identity of the Gangi community for over four centuries, attracting thousands of pilgrims and visitors from all over the island.
The focal point of the festival is the Sanctuary of the Holy Spirit, built on the slopes of Mount Marone and considered the only one in Italy dedicated to the third Person of the Holy Trinity. Its dedication dates back to the 16th century and it remains a pilgrimage destination deeply rooted in the town's social fabric.
The highlight is the grand procession that departs from the Mother Church and, winding through the uphill streets of the town, reaches the Sanctuary. It features over forty wooden statues of saints and the Madonna, fine works created by Sicilian masters, including numerous sculptures attributed to the Gangi-born artist Filippo Quattrocchi (1734-1818). The statues, carried on the shoulders of men, women, and youths, follow a centuries-old order: the youngest confraternity leads the procession, while the oldest โ the Most Holy Savior โ brings up the rear.
Upon reaching the sanctuary's churchyard, the bearers perform the "Miracula" rite (known in dialect as "a cursa e i miracula di santi"): with the heavy statues on their shoulders, they run back and forth before the entrance, accompanied by the sound of bells and shouts of devotion to the Holy Spirit. It is one of the most evocative and participatory moments of the entire festival, capable of moving even first-time observers.
Alongside the religious dimension โ including the novena, confraternity pilgrimages, Pentecost vigil, candle offerings, and solemn masses โ the festival features evenings of music and entertainment that enliven Gangi's squares, culminating in a fireworks display that lights up the Madonie sky. It is an event that blends the sacred and the popular, tradition and village celebration, in one of the most fascinating settings in the province of Palermo.
The 2026 edition took on a special meaning as it coincided with the 450th anniversary of the dedication of the Sanctuary of the Holy Spirit, an occasion that gave the event profound historical, spiritual, and identity-related value for the entire Gangi community.
The festivities were spread over several days, intertwining moments of prayer, liturgical celebrations, and entertainment:
Over forty wooden statues paraded along the village streets. On the sanctuary's churchyard, the bearers performed the traditional back-and-forth runs of the "Miracula" rite, a culminating moment that has drawn hundreds of faithful for over four centuries.
Gangi (PA) is located in the heart of the Madonie. By car, take the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway, exit at Tremonzelli, then follow the SS120 towards Gangi. It is approximately 1h45 from Palermo and 1h30 from Catania. The nearest train station is Gangi-Geraci-Castelbuono, though it is located at a distance from the town center.
The festival culminates on the Monday following Pentecost, with the grand procession in the late afternoon. Festivities take place in the preceding days with liturgical celebrations and evening shows.
Admission to the events is free. Comfortable shoes are recommended for following the procession along the steep village streets. Please park in the areas outside the historic center, which is closed to traffic during the festival.
