A day of talks and debates at the Teatro Odeon in Ponsacco
The History and Philosophy Festival is a cultural event held in Ponsacco, a key town in the Valdera area of the province of Pisa, in the heart of Tuscany. Launched in 2025, the festival offers a full day dedicated to the exchange of ideas, featuring conferences, lectures, and round-table discussions hosted in the Teatro Odeon. The goal is to take historical research and philosophical reflection out of university lecture halls and turn them into a shared heritage for a wide audience, fostering an open dialogue between scholars and citizens.
Each edition of the festival revolves around a unifying theme, addressed by prestigious speakers from academia, journalism, and research. The mornings are dedicated to a series of talks that illustrate the theme from different angles, while the afternoon concludes with a round-table discussion that brings together multiple voices, leaving room for questions from the audience. This structure allows for an alternation between monographic depth and collective discussion, balanced to stimulate curiosity and critical thinking.
The festival is deeply rooted in the local reality of Ponsacco and the Valdera region. Promoted by the Municipality of Ponsacco and organized by the Accademia dei Fortificati, the event benefits from the collaboration of local associations and cultural entities, including the Circolo Filippo Mazzei, and is supported by the Tuscany Region, the University of Pisa, and its Department of Civilizations and Forms of Knowledge. The presence of professors from the Pisan university testifies to the solid bond between the festival and the world of research, which makes the province of Pisa a key cultural hub.
One of the event's strengths is its full accessibility: admission is free of charge, with no reservation required, subject to availability. This choice reflects the festival's vocation as a common good, capable of bringing history and philosophy closer even to those who do not usually attend academic conferences. For those visiting the Valdera, the event is also an opportunity to discover Ponsacco, known for its tradition in furniture design, and the entire Pisan district, rich in history, art, and landscapes.
Although it is a young event, the History and Philosophy Festival has quickly established itself as a highly anticipated date in the Tuscan cultural calendar, capable of intercepting major current issues and translating them into an accessible format. The ability to read the present through the tools of history and philosophy makes every edition a precious opportunity for collective reflection.
The second edition, held on Saturday, April 11, 2026, starting at 9:45 AM at the Teatro Odeon in Ponsacco, offered a day of conferences dedicated to the role of the United States, on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. After the institutional greetings, the morning featured talks by scholars from the University of Pisa and journalists, while the afternoon concluded with a round-table discussion on global geopolitical structures.
