The Middle Ages return to the heart of Ponsacco with processions, flag-wavers, and the challenge between the six districts
The Historical Re-enactment of the Battle of Ponte di Sacco brings back to life one of the defining episodes in the history of Ponsacco, in the Province of Pisa: the 1497 clash between the Pisans and the Florentines. That year, Florentine troops led by Guidubaldo da Montefeltro defeated the alliance between Pisa and Ponsacco, forcing a surrender and causing the severe destruction of the town's castle. It is from this late medieval chapter that the event, organized by the Associazione Ponte di Sacco, was born.
For an entire weekend, the center of Ponsacco turns into an authentic medieval village. Piazza d'Appiano and the streets of the historic center host costumed processions, musical groups, flag-wavers, demonstrations by crossbowmen and archers, a historical market, jugglers, and folk shows, creating an atmosphere that enchants both adults and children.
The heart of the re-enactment is the Palio Challenge, a competition between the six districts into which the town is divided, engaging in games and contests that recall the 1497 battle. The six districts of Ponsacco are Appiano, Castello, Sant'Andrea in Petriolo, La Ripa (Val di Cava), Il Gabbiano (Le Melorie), and Poggio San Giorgio, each with its own colors and symbols, the result of research into the toponymy and identity of the various local neighborhoods.
The re-enactment has grown over time thanks to the creation of the districts, which animate town life well beyond the days of the festival. Supported by the Municipal Administration of Ponsacco and the Tuscany Region, with the contribution of local entities such as the University of the Third Age and Confcommercio Pisa, it is now one of the most cherished events in the Valdera area and an opportunity to discover the history of this corner of Tuscany through the charm of the Middle Ages.
The 14th edition confirmed the two-day format. Friday, May 22, at 9:00 PM at the Mons. Meliani Auditorium, the Historical Symposium took place, with the six districts of Ponsacco performing historical-themed theatrical sketches. Saturday, May 23, from 4:00 PM until late evening, the historic center came alive with historical processions, musicians, flag-wavers, a medieval market, juggling, and crossbowmen demonstrations.
Ponsacco is located in the Valdera area, in the Province of Pisa. By car: take the Pontedera exit from the FI-PI-LI highway, then a few minutes towards Ponsacco.
