A centuries-old fair in the heart of Marsica

Every year on May 1st, the center of Pescina—a town in the Marsica area of the Abruzzo region—transforms to host the Historic Fair of San Berardo. For an entire day, the streets surrounding Piazza Mazzarino are lined with stalls offering local products, handicrafts, sweets, clothing, and all kinds of goods, making it one of the most popular events in the Marsican calendar. Organized by the Confraternity of San Berardo, the fair attracts visitors not only from Pescina but from all the surrounding municipalities, serving as a key moment of gathering and celebration for the entire community.

In honor of the patron saint

The fair serves as the civic and popular heart of the patronal festivities dedicated to San Berardo dei Marsi, a bishop and cardinal venerated as the protector of the city. The celebrations span several days, blending faith, tradition, and entertainment: from the novena and religious ceremonies in the basilica to the evocative historical re-enactment of the translation of the body of San Berardo from San Benedetto dei Marsi to Pescina, and the solemn processions featuring the saint's bust through the town streets.

Music, tradition, and festive atmosphere

On May 1st, the day begins with the traditional "colpi scuri" (fireworks) and continues with the sounds of the marching band and evening performances in the square. In the following days, Pescina comes alive with concerts, orchestras, children's entertainment, theatrical performances, and the grand fireworks display that concludes the festival. The Historic Fair of San Berardo is much more than a simple market: it is a collective ritual that strengthens the identity of the Marsican community and keeps a tradition passed down through generations alive.
