Flowers, aromatic plants, and medicinal herbs at Avio Castle
Herbarium is the springtime event that transforms Avio Castle—one of the most evocative sites managed by FAI (National Trust for Italy)—into a vibrant celebration of colors and scents dedicated to flowers, aromatic plants, and medicinal herbs. The festival takes place in Sabbionara, a village in the municipality of Avio, located at the southern tip of Trentino-Alto Adige, at the foot of the medieval manor overlooking the Vallagarina valley.
For two days, the castle courtyard and grounds host around twenty-five local exhibitors offering aromatic herbs, edible flowers, medicinal plants, herbal teas, natural cosmetics, jams, floral jewelry, and seedlings. The event explores the countless uses of plants, both past and present, from rediscovering folk traditions to modern curative and aesthetic applications.
The program is packed with activities for all ages. Creative workshops allow participants to build their own herbarium, prepare aromatic salt, or craft a dreamcatcher. The schedule also includes guided tours of the castle, a nature walk outside the walls to explore local biodiversity, and an interactive family tour featuring a treasure hunt based on the manor's legends. The event also features book presentations on flowers and wild herbs, as well as insights into FAI's beekeeping project.
The backdrop for the event is Avio Castle, one of the oldest and most monumental in Trentino, famous for its 14th-century frescoes and panoramic views of the Adige Valley. Donated to FAI, the manor is now a destination for visitors and cultural events that highlight the connection between historical heritage, nature, and the local community.
Herbarium is part of the initiatives that enliven the Trentino spring, in dialogue with the local food and wine scene, and is supported by the Municipality of Avio and local agricultural producers. The festival combines naturalistic education, craftsmanship, and conviviality, offering visitors, families, and botany enthusiasts a chance to rediscover the plant world in a setting of great charm.
The fourth edition of Herbarium was held on May 16 and 17, 2026, at Avio Castle, a FAI heritage site in Sabbionara d'Avio (TN), with continuous hours from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
The event centered on a market exhibition with around twenty-five local exhibitors showcasing aromatic herbs, edible flowers, medicinal plants, herbal teas, and natural cosmetics. The program featured creative workshops ("Build your own herbarium," "Prepare aromatic salt," and "The dreamcatcher"), guided tours of the castle at 11:00 AM and 4:15 PM, a nature walk outside the walls at 12:00 PM, and an interactive family tour at 2:15 PM with a treasure hunt. On Saturday, May 16, the book "Taraxacos" by Antonio Sarzo, dedicated to flowers and wild herbs, was presented.
