The October 31st festival dedicated to the children of San Mango sul Calore, featuring costumes, trick-or-treating, and entertainment.
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Halloween Party in San Mango sul Calore, located in the heart of Irpinia in the Province of Avellino, is one of those events that perfectly captures the life of a small village in inland Campania. It is not a large, ticketed event or a manufactured tourist attraction; it is a celebration that the town—with just over a thousand residents—gifts to its children every October 31st, and which has become a permanent fixture on the municipal calendar over the years.
The initiative is promoted and managed directly by the Municipal Administration of San Mango sul Calore, which opens up public spaces—the square and the Social Center—and coordinates the entertainment, safety, and hospitality. The result is an evening where the Anglo-Saxon tradition of Halloween is reinterpreted with a local twist, sharing the same spirit of community found in traditional Irpinian festivals.
The meeting point is Piazza Santuario, in the town center, in the late afternoon. Children arrive in costume—witches, skeletons, pumpkins, and monsters of all kinds—accompanied by parents and grandparents, and from there, the tour through the village streets begins. The compact size of San Mango sul Calore is an advantage: the streets are safe to walk, and local families participate by opening their doors to the young visitors.
The most anticipated moment is, of course, the "trick-or-treat", which in recent editions has wound through the streets of the historic center. It is the most free-spirited and chaotic part of the evening, the one the children remember most: knocking on doors, reciting the magic words, and filling their baskets with candies and chocolates. The route is never very long, but a full tour of the village makes for a complete afternoon.
After the walk through the streets, the party moves to the municipal Social Center, which is transformed into a themed space for the night. The 2025 edition program, the most detailed published to date, followed this schedule:
In previous editions, the gathering in the square was moved up to 4:00 PM, confirming that times may vary slightly from year to year: it is always advisable to check the details on the Municipality's channels in the weeks leading up to the event.
The town sits on a hill overlooking the Calore River at an altitude of about 475 meters, surrounded by rich vegetation that has brought fame to its typical products: the San Mango fig, the red chestnut, and the wines of the Taurasi area. The local calendar is marked by deeply felt events—the Fig Festival in July, the Cavalcade of Saint Anne, and the patronal feast of Saint Theodore in August—and the Halloween Party represents the younger, more informal version of this tradition of shared celebration.
Visitors from out of town will also find heritage to discover: the Church of Saint Anne with its original tuff altar, the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, and, not far away, the so-called Hannibal's Bridge, a structure from the Roman era.
The event is explicitly aimed at children and families: official channels highlight it as suitable for those visiting with children, teenagers, and groups of friends. No registration or booking is required: just show up in the square, preferably in costume.
For 2026, there are no official communications yet regarding the Halloween Party in San Mango sul Calore, in the Province of Avellino. The official website of the Municipality does not list any events on the calendar, and the Sistema Irpinia portal of the Province has not published any posters for the upcoming October 31st celebration.
This is a physiological delay: in previous years, the announcement arrived in the weeks immediately preceding the party, with the publication of the poster on the Municipal Administration's social media channels. Before planning a trip, it is therefore advisable to check with the Municipality (phone +39 0827 75358, email [email protected]) or check the Municipal Administration's Facebook page.
In previous editions, the format remained stable: a gathering of children in costume in Piazza Santuario in the late afternoon, a "trick-or-treat" tour through the village streets, followed by entertainment, a buffet, and music at the municipal Social Center. An event designed for families, with no registration or booking required.
By car: From Avellino, take the SS7 Appia or the junction towards the Calore Valley, exiting towards Montemarano or Castelvetere sul Calore, followed by provincial roads to San Mango sul Calore. From Naples, follow the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, take the Avellino Est exit, and then the local Irpinian roads (about an hour and a half in total).
Gathering in Piazza Santuario, in the center of San Mango sul Calore (AV), with a "trick-or-treat" tour through the village streets and the continuation of the party at the municipal Social Center, at Via Cesare Battisti 1, 83050 San Mango sul Calore.
The town is located at an altitude of about 475 meters, and it gets cold in the evening at the end of October: a warm costume or a jacket over the disguise is essential. It is useful to bring a flashlight or a lantern for the walk through the streets and a basket or bag for collecting treats. Parking in the center is limited: it is better to leave the car in the open spaces at the entrance to the town and proceed on foot.
San Mango sul Calore does not have a wide range of accommodation: farmhouses and small guest houses can be found in the neighboring towns of the Calore Valley and in the Taurasi area, all reachable in a few minutes by car. Be sure to try the local products—figs, chestnuts, and local wines—at the farms in the area.
