About Gualtieri Sicaminò Living Nativity

Every December, the historic Misericordia district of Gualtieri Sicaminò, a small town in the province of Messina, transforms into a grand living nativity scene. Amidst narrow streets lit only by torches and candles, the entire community stages ancient crafts, scenes of daily life, and the Nativity, along a evocative path that crosses the Ponte Vecchio and the Annunziata church. A journey through time that weaves together faith, art, history, and Sicilian folk tradition.

The living nativity in the heart of the Misericordia

The Gualtieri Sicaminò Living Nativity is one of the most heartfelt Christmas events in this Messina town. Every year, in the days following Christmas, the ancient Misericordia district dresses up for the occasion and becomes a large open-air stage, where the entire community of Gualtieri Sicaminò participates in the re-enactment of the Nativity and life of the past.

The unique feature of this nativity is the atmosphere: the alleys and narrow streets of the district are lit exclusively by torches and candles, with no modern lighting, to give the visitor the authentic charm of a village from another era. The result is a setting of rare beauty, where faith, art, history, and tradition intertwine.

The route and the scenes

The path winds through the most characteristic points of the historic center: from Herod's Palace, which opens the story, to the Ponte Vecchio and the Annunziata church. Along the way, the performers bring to life ancient crafts that have now disappeared, restoring dignity and memory to the professions of yesteryear:

  • the blacksmith, the carpenter, and the cobbler at work in their shops;
  • women engaged in embroidery, the preparation of fresh pasta, and wool carding;
  • scenes of daily life in the Sicilian peasant village.

Music, songs, and dances accompany visitors along the entire route, making the experience even more engaging. The culminating moment is the Nativity, with the Baby Jesus surrounded by a host of little angels, symbols of peace, light, and hope.

A young but deep-rooted tradition

The Gualtieri Sicaminò living nativity took its first steps with its first edition in 2023 and has quickly established itself as a highly anticipated event, capable of attracting visitors from neighboring towns in the province of Messina and across Sicily. The event is part of the town's rich calendar of festivals, which also includes the devotion to Saint Nicholas.

Gualtieri Sicaminò and its territory

Located on the slopes of the Peloritani Mountains, in the province of Messina and within the Sicily region, Gualtieri Sicaminò is a small town with a discreet charm. Nearby lies the ancient, almost abandoned village of Sicaminò, with the Baronial Palace of the Avarna family and a 19th-century chapel, witnesses to a rich and fascinating local history. The living nativity is the ideal opportunity to discover this authentic corner of Sicily during the most magical time of the year.

Gualtieri Sicaminò Living Nativity — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Gualtieri Sicaminò Living Nativity is expected, as every year, during the Christmas period in the Misericordia district. The official dates and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the organizers. It is expected, as per tradition, to take place in the days following Christmas, with the usual route featuring torches, ancient crafts, and the Nativity.

The Gualtieri Sicaminò Living Nativity returns in December 2026 in the historic Misericordia district. At the moment, the precise dates and the program for the 2026 edition have not yet been published: the organizers have announced that the program will be communicated soon. As in previous editions, the event is expected to offer the evocative path through the alleys lit by torches and candles, scenes of ancient crafts, and the representation of the Nativity. This page will be updated as soon as official dates and details are available.
