About Grilled Cockerel Festival

The Grilled Cockerel Festival is one of the most anticipated gastronomic events of the summer in Prignano Cilento, a small town in the province of Salerno nestled in the hills of the Cilento region. For two August evenings, the town center fills with the aroma of charcoal: the cockerel, cooked on the grill, is the absolute star, accompanied by homemade fusilli, potatoes, cured meats, fried pizza, and traditional desserts, all served with local red wine. Ballroom dancing and live music round out the festivities until late at night.

A village festival in the heart of Cilento

Some festivals are created to attract tourists, while others are born simply because the village wants to come together. The Grilled Cockerel Festival in Prignano Cilento belongs to the latter category: two August evenings where this small town in the province of Salerno, in Campania, opens its streets to visitors from neighboring villages, the coast of Agropoli, and the Cilento hinterland, serving up the best of its local culinary tradition.

Prignano Cilento has just over a thousand inhabitants and is located a few kilometers from the sea, in the heart of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. It is a land of olive groves, wood-fired ovens that are still in use, and recipes that never needed to be written down: the festival is the moment when all this becomes public, shared, and served on paper plates under the streetlights.

The grilled cockerel, the absolute star

The dish that gives the event its name is the grilled cockerel: young chicken, split and flattened, cooked slowly over a wood-fired grill and served piping hot. It is a simple preparation that allows for no shortcuts: what matters is the quality of the meat, the patience of those turning the skewers, and the right amount of time on the coals. On festival nights, the grills run non-stop, and the scent can be smelled as soon as you enter the village.

What to eat at the stands

The festival menu doesn't stop at the cockerel: the stands offer a complete tour of the most authentic home-style Cilento cuisine. Among the dishes associated with the event:

  • Grilled cockerel with potatoes and fries
  • Lagane e ceci (pasta with chickpeas), one of the iconic dishes of Cilento
  • Hand-rolled fusilli
  • Grilled sausage and local cured meats
  • Fried pizza and battered zucchini flowers
  • Acquasale, stale bread soaked with tomato and oil
  • Watermelon and traditional desserts
  • Local red wine by the glass

It is peasant cuisine in the noblest sense of the term: few ingredients, all recognizable, and almost all locally sourced. Visitors from outside the region will find an authentic version of the Mediterranean diet here, of which Cilento is considered the cradle.

Music, dancing, and atmosphere

As per the tradition of Cilento festivals, the table is joined by a stage. The evenings are accompanied by live music and ballroom dancing, with bands alternating between Southern folk repertoires, tarantellas, and dance music. People eat early, dance until late, and the squares remain full well past midnight: it is the part of the festival that the locals consider just as essential as the cockerel.

Who organizes it

The event is managed by the Antichi Sapori Prignanesi association, which carries on the legacy of an event born from the initiative of the Youth Forum of Prignano and has grown over the years to become one of the most defining events of the local summer. The festival is part of a rich municipal summer calendar, which also includes Forni in Festa, August religious feasts, and shows organized by the Pro Loco.

Prignano Cilento, a village to discover

Those arriving for the festival should arrive a few hours early. The historic center of Prignano Cilento preserves the layout of Cilento hill villages, with narrow alleys, stone portals, and glimpses of the Alento valley. A few minutes' drive away are Agropoli with its Aragonese castle, the beaches of Santa Maria di Castellabate, and, just a little further south, the archaeological site of Paestum with its Greek temples. The festival thus becomes the perfect evening stop for a day already full of discovery.

When it takes place

The event is traditionally scheduled for mid-August, with two consecutive evenings starting around 8:00 PM. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been released by the organizers: it is best to follow the channels of the Municipality of Prignano Cilento and local associations in the weeks leading up to Ferragosto, when the poster with the full program is usually published.
