Christmas in Ascoli Satriano, between the Living Nativity and ancient Ausculum
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Grifoni Christmas is the series of festive events that the Municipality of Ascoli Satriano, in the Daunian Mountains in the province of Foggia, dedicates to the holiday season every December. The name pays homage to the famous Grifoni of Ascoli Satriano, the Hellenistic polychrome marble sculptural group housed in the local Museum Center, which has become the town's symbol. For weeks, the village is filled with lights, decorations, markets, family activities, and musical appointments that accompany the Advent and Christmas period.
The most anticipated moment and the true heart of the event is the Living Nativity, organized by the Ausculum in Apulia association. The evocative streets of the historic center, including alleys, courtyards, and the Ducal Castle, are transformed into a large open-air stage animated by hundreds of costumed extras. Lively markets, workshops, traditional homes, and scenes of daily life recreate an entire village, while the path gradually leads to the solemn representation of the Nativity.
The uniqueness of the Ascoli Satriano nativity lies in its setting: the village literally returns to "year zero," evoking the atmosphere of ancient Ausculum, the Roman city from which the town descends. Enriching the scene is a real Roman encampment, set up by historical re-enactment groups, which brings the charm of legionaries, tents, and the customs of the era to visitors. It is an unusual and successful encounter between the Christian tradition of the Nativity and the historical memory of the Daunian territory.
The sacred performance is made even more intense by the live music of the Camerata Mvsica Antiqva, which performs melodies with ancient instruments, while dancers in period costumes offer choreographies inspired by the traditions of the past. Along the route, there is no shortage of refreshment points with hot mulled wine, traditional sweets, and local gastronomic specialties, inviting visitors to discover the flavors of Apulian cuisine in the Christmas setting.
Visiting Grifoni Christmas is also an opportunity to discover Ascoli Satriano, one of the most history-rich villages in northern Apulia: from the Museum Center with the Grifoni to the historic center overlooking the Carapelle valley, the town offers an authentic setting far from major tourist flows, ideal for experiencing the holidays in an intimate and traditional way.
The dates for the 2026 edition of Grifoni Christmas and the Living Nativity have not yet been announced: the event traditionally takes place in mid-December. The detailed program is released by the Municipality of Ascoli Satriano and the Ausculum in Apulia association in the weeks preceding the holidays.
