The cycling tour in the geothermal heart of the Alta Val di Cecina
The Green Fondo Paolo Bettini - La Geotermia is much more than a simple cycling race: it is a journey into the geothermal heart of Tuscany, in the Alta Val di Cecina area between the municipalities of Pomarance and Castelnuovo di Val di Cecina, in the province of Pisa. Here, the landscape takes on a lunar quality: hissing steam vents, iridescent lagoons, fumaroles, and geothermal power plants alternate with medieval villages and the Colline Metallifere (Metalliferous Hills) that shaped the region's mining history.
The event bears the name of its creator and host, Paolo Bettini, the 2004 Athens Olympic champion and two-time road world champion, who hails from this very corner of Tuscany. For him, the Green Fondo is first and foremost a way to help people discover his home: "an opportunity to show my land to those who haven't discovered it yet," as he likes to say. The organization is managed by ASD VeloEtruria Pomarance, a historic local sports club, with the patronage of the municipalities of Pomarance and Castelnuovo di Val di Cecina.
The beauty of the Green Fondo is that it caters to everyone, from the Sunday cyclist to the trained amateur. Each edition offers three tracks of varying lengths that wind through San Dalmazio, Larderello, Montecastelli Pisano, Monterotondo Marittimo, Sasso Pisano, and the villages scattered across the hills:
The Green Fondo is also about conviviality: the program is enriched with moments dedicated to families, such as the gymkhana for children, and the unmissable Cyclist's Dinner, featuring a barbecue supervised by Paolo Bettini himself. Over the years, the event has grown to attract nearly three hundred participants from all over Italy, becoming a staple for those who love slow cycling, good food, and the authentic landscapes of the province of Pisa.
The 2026 edition of the Green Fondo Paolo Bettini - La Geotermia confirmed the charm of an event that combines sport and territory. Three routes were available, all starting and finishing in Pomarance (PI): 120 km for the Marathon, 70.8 km for the Classic, and 41.4 km for the Light. Making this edition special was an art-themed race pack, a tribute to the 400th anniversary of the death of Cristoforo Roncalli, the famous Pomarancio.
The timed challenge was played out on the 3.9-kilometer climb from Vecchienne to Sasso Pisano, the usual setting for the verdict. Among the men, Lorenzo Galli (Cicli Falaschi) triumphed with a time of 6'39", finishing just one second ahead of Davide Pellegrini and Luca Bonaguidi. Among the women, Carmen Mancini won with 7'51", with clearer gaps over her opponents.
Start and finish in Pomarance (PI), with three routes to choose from:
Timed section of 3.9 km uphill from Vecchienne to Sasso Pisano, valid for the ranking.
Pomarance and Castelnuovo di Val di Cecina can be reached by car via the SS68 (Volterra) or the SS439. The nearest train stations are Cecina or Pontedera, from where you can continue by car. The reference airport is Galileo Galilei in Pisa.
Registrations are made online through the dedicated platform indicated on the event's official website.
Bring clothing suitable for the temperature variations typical of the geothermal hills and a good supply of water for the more demanding sections.
